Biblical Story Of Adam And Eve With Lessons

Adam was the first person created by God, and that makes him the progenitor of the human race. After God had created all things, including animals, He said, “Let us make man in our own image and after our likeness.” Bible scholars believe that God was referring to His Son, Jesus Christ, when He said “let us”. So on the sixth day, God created him from the dust of the ground. He breathed into him the breath of life and he became a living being. God called him Adam, meaning “man” in the Hebrew tongue. Thereafter, God gave him dominion over the rest of the creations. 

After God created Adam, he was placed in the Garden of Eden to dress and cultivate it. God told him that he could eat from every tree in the garden, except from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God said that any day he eats from this tree of the knowledge of good and evil, the penalty would be death.

God also gave Adam the responsibility of naming all the animals and birds in the Garden. The bible says that whatever he called any animal, that is the name it bears. However, Adam could not find a suitable helpmate for himself among the animals and birds.

Therefore, God put Adam to a deep sleep, took one of his ribs and formed the first woman with it. God then brought her to Adam, and he called her Woman, which in the Hebrew tongue is Eve, because she was taken out of Man. Adam acknowledged Eve as the bone of his bones and flesh of His flesh. 

This was the origin of the institution of marriage in the Holy Bible. Adam and Eve, his wife, were both naked, and they were not ashamed. This was because the glory of God covered them.

They were in this position of nakedness and sweet fellowship with God, until the serpent came to the woman, convinced her to eat the fruit from the forbidden tree, thereby causing her and Adam to sin against God. The serpent presented the fruit from the forbidden tree to Eve as a fruit to be desired to make one wise and be like God. The three categories of sin originated from the encounter of Eve with the serpent. They are the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. (Genesis 3:6)

After being convinced by the serpent, Eve saw that the fruit was good for food (the lust of the flesh), pleasant to the eyes (lust of the eyes), and a tree to be desired to make one wise (pride of life – she wanted to be like God!).

When Eve took the fruit, she gave it to Adam, her husband. Immediately, they both discovered that they were naked. So, they sewed fig leaves together and made for themselves an apron. When God came to the garden as usual, to have fellowship with them, they were afraid and hid themselves from Him. God asked them why they were hiding, and they answered that they were naked.

God asked them, “How did you know that you were naked? Have you eaten from the fruit of the forbidden tree?” Then, they began to apportion blame. Adam said to God, “The woman you brought to me gave me the fruit, and I ate it.” When it was her turn, Eve said, “The serpent deceived me to eat the fruit.” As punishment for this great sin of disobedience, God cursed the serpent that it would henceforth crawl on its belly. He also put an enmity between the woman and the serpent. The seed of the woman would bruise its head, while its seed would bruise the heels of the woman’s seeds.

As for the woman, God said her sorrow has been multiplied, and she would bring forth children in great pain. Her desires would be to her husband, while he rules over her.

The man’s punishment was that he would eat in sorrow, and the ground would yield thorns and thistles for him because the ground has been cursed for man’s sake. He would sweat before he achieves anything in life until he returns to the dust from where he was formed. God was however gracious to them, He made coats from animal skins and clothed them with it.

Thereafter, God expelled them from the Garden of Eden, so that they would not eat from the tree of Life and become immortal like God. God placed angels with flaming swords at the garden, to keep watch over the tree of life.

LESSONS FROM THE STORY OF ADAM AND EVE

There are lots of lessons to garner from the story of the progenitors of the human race. Some of these lessons are:

1. Human beings are a unique creation of God. God created other creatures with the spoken word – let there be – but went into action to create man.
2. Right from creation, man has been honored. This is the honor of man being created in God’s image and likeness. Additionally, god gave man dominion over the other creatures.
3. Sin is a sinker. Sin destroyed the great relationship that man had with God in the beginning.
4. In the marriage institution, both the man and his wife are equal before God. This explains why God took a bone from Adam’s ribs (his side) to create a woman.
5. Sin makes a man open to shame. It was when Adam and Eve sinned against God by disobeying that they became ashamed of their nakedness. 
6. Sin and disobedience is capable of stripping one of God’s glory. The glory of God that previously covered Adam and Eve was taken away the moment they went against His command.
7. Fear of both the known and unknown takes over a person who is no longer in good fellowship with God. When God came into the garden to fellowship with them as usual, they were afraid and hid themselves. They fell out of the sweet rapport with God.
8. Instead of apportioning blame or trying to justify our wrongdoings, we should accept that we have sinned, and ask God for forgiveness.
9. Disobeying God can incur divine curse upon anyone. The genesis of the chaos and life of hardship we are experiencing now is as a result of the curse placed upon our first parents in the Garden of Eden. (Only Jesus Christ can redeem us from this curse!)
10. God is extremely gracious, that even in their disobedience, He still solved their problems. He made coats from skins and used it to cover their nakedness. This means that as soon as we realize our mistakes, and go to God in repentance, he is ready to receive us and clothe us with his glory again.
