How To Overcome Spirit Spouse
Spirit spouse means a spouse which is not human that is not joined by physical marriage on earth but by spiritual marriage in the unseen world. Spirit spouse means a husband or wife, who has no human form but engages with a human with the physical body. In our world today, due to different ministries involved in prayer and deliverance, a lot of mysteries have been made available unto men.
In the course of deliverance, the voices of demons in a person or the person under demonic influences can be heard. Sometime, the demons tend to speak through whom they influence and eventually through such means, men pay attention to the manifestation to know the kind of evil spirit that has taken charge of that soul. Do you know that even during such manifestations, demons can lie or deceive men; telling them lies and creating false impressions of who they really are. Sometimes, it may look like there is no right word for such manifestation but spirit spouse was used due to our limitations.
And so in such occurrences, spiritual husbands have been mentioned through such manifestations. It’s believed that some people experience sexual intercourse with certain kinds of spiritual beings in their dreams while they are asleep. Some see the physical effects when they wake up. Such an effect can be, the night clothing becoming wet when he/she wakes up and some others feel like energy has been sapped from them, in other words they feel empty. Some have claimed they can’t see the face of the person who slept with them. While some others have claimed to see the face of a person whom they know sleeping with them in the dream. Meanwhile, those faces are just carried around by familiar spirits.
These manifestations can be real, but the question is, should the name “Spirit spouse” be the right term to describe such manifestations? Scripturally, the word spirit spouse doesn’t exist. But the scriptures made us understand that Jesus went about casting out devils and evil spirits without actually mentioning the dimensions such evil spirits operated. We can also see in the scriptures that Jesus addresses some deliverances by the predicament the person is entangled into.

We see in the scriptures where Jesus asked the name of the demon (legion; for they are many) before he actually delivered the man. Mark 5:8
For Jesus had already said to the spirit, “come out of the man, you evil spirit.” 9. Then Jesus demanded, “what is your name?” and he replied, “my name is Legion, because there are many of us inside this man.”
So the word “spirit spouse” may be used due to the statement by the demon spirit possessing a person. Now, the fact that a person had an encounter in dreams where he had sexual intercourse does not fully guarantee he has a spirit spouse, even though this can be a sign of having one. Some people experience that due to the kind of sight, sound and thought they had during the day and even at night before sleeping; It most times starts from lust in the heart.
Therefore, one must guard his heart and the thoughts he harbours. Our eyes are a major gateway and our ears another path to our beings, and so we must be careful with the images we watch and what we listen to, for they are capable of destroying our hearts and the thoughts that fill it. We must flee from every form of immorality that gives the devil an entrance into our lives; through this we are able to overcome the games of the enemies.
Matthew 5: 28: But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Lust is not something that happens once; repeated action sources and fuels lust. And so the spirit of lust comes in to promote unusual sexual desires, when one repeats something, without self control. Like stated earlier, the spirit of lust opens the gate for other kinds of spirit of immorality to come in. So the fact that one experiences sexual intercourse with spirit in the dream does not fully mean they have been married to them. In fact such a spirit can make one masturbate in the dream and on waking up, he may feel you had sex with them. One is not married to them because of such an incident. Other traditions believe otherwise because their beliefs and allegiance to demonic spirits have created such strongholds amongst them. Scriptures said, in 1 Corinthians 6: 16: And don’t you realize that if a man joins himself to a prostitute, he becomes one body with her? For the scriptures say, “The two are united into one”. The book of 1 Corinthians 6: 17 says: But the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him. Therefore realizing that you are joined with Christ, no spirit has the right to claim you, therefore you must confess with your lips that you are not joined to any spirit man or woman.
Now the scriptures help us to understand that sexual intercourse is only possible with a fellow man and not spirit. Vs 17, help us to understand that you can become one with a spirit through obedience, submission and allegiance to such spirit but not through sexual intercourse. Sexual experience mostly comes from the place of our lustful desires in our heart and mind. The spirit of lust (“spirit spouse”) comes in to make us continue that sin in order that we may not be in right standing with God.
In the book of Genesis, we see angels who were called “sons of God” leaving their place of authority to sleep with women.
Genesis 6: 2 : The sons of God saw the beautiful women and took any they wanted as their wives. From this scripture, we see that angels who are called spirits according to HEB 1:14, can transform to a form of a physical man just to have intercourse with man. These angels didn’t sleep with these sets of beautiful women in their spirit form but had physical sexual intercourse with them.
And this was the result in Genesis 6:4 : In those days, and for some time after, giant Nephilites lived on the earth, for whenever the sons of God had intercourse with women, they gave birth to children who became the heroes and famous warriors of ancient times.
Whatever spirit in the form of man that sleeps with a human cannot give birth to natural children but a different kind of species. We can also see angels in form of man in the book of
Genesis 18: 2: He looked up and noticed three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he ran to meet them and welcomed them, bowing low to the ground. 3. “My lord,” he said, if it pleases you, stop here for a while” .Genesis 19 Also in, :1-2
That evening the two angels came to the entrance of the city of Sodom. Lot was sitting there, and when he saw them, he stood up to meet them. Then he welcomed them and bowed with his face to the ground. 2. “My lords, he said, come to my home to wash your feet, and be my guests for the night. You may then get up early in the morning and be on your way again. Oh no, they replied. We’ll just spend the night out here in the city square.”
Although angels are spirits, some have been given the ability to appear as men. They only appear as such based on the instructions that God wants to pass. It doesn’t happen every time. That’s why St Paul said in Hebrews 13:2; “don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it!”.
These angels we show hospitality are those who mainly appear as men. They do so most especially to give the message of God in a different way.
So for a man to have a “spirit spouse” doesn’t mean such a man sleeps with a demonic spirit in the dream except such spirit takes the body of a man, possesses him and appears as man to sleep with them. Sex has something to do with blood communication before the two shall become one spiritually, one with the Lord involved.
Therefore being in Christ, we must remember that we are not slaves to sin and if so, the devil and his agents cannot take advantage of us. We must strive to live a life of purity as that keeps the devil far away from us.
