Subscribe NowGoing for a medical test can create fear even before anything has been diagnosed. Your mind may begin asking, What if they discover something serious? What if the result is bad? What will happen to my family, work, plans, or future? Sometimes, the fear of what the test might reveal becomes heavier than the condition that brought you to the hospital.
But Jesus already told us that living in this world would sometimes involve difficult experiences. He said in John 16:33, “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
Therefore, experiencing sickness or undergoing a medical investigation does not mean that God has abandoned you or that your Christian faith has failed. Challenges are part of living in this present world, but Christ has promised us His peace and His presence in the midst of them.
Do not feel ashamed or spiritually condemned because you are facing a health challenge. Even faithful servants of God experienced physical sickness. Paul wrote concerning Timothy in 1 Timothy 5:23, “Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.” Notice the expression “thine often infirmities.” Timothy was a committed servant of God, yet Paul acknowledged that he experienced recurring physical problems.
Paul also said in 2 Timothy 4:20, “Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick.” Trophimus was a fellow worker in the ministry, yet the Bible plainly records that he was sick. This should teach us not to immediately conclude that every believer who becomes sick has sinned, lacks faith, or is under God’s punishment. Sometimes faithful believers go through health challenges and need prayer, medical attention, rest, treatment, and encouragement.
Therefore, do not be afraid of taking the test. A medical test is not automatically a declaration that something terrible is wrong with you; it is a means of obtaining information about your health.
Proverbs 18:13 says, “He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.” In the same way, do not allow fear to give you a diagnosis before the doctors have properly investigated what is happening.
As you prepare for the test, place everything before God—the laboratory, the medical personnel, the equipment, your samples, the report, and whatever treatment may be required afterward.
Philippians 4:6 says, “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Instead of allowing your mind to manufacture frightening conclusions, turn those thoughts into specific prayers.
Prayer does not mean that you should neglect appropriate medical care. Neither should seeking medical attention make you feel that you have stopped trusting God. Jesus Himself said in Luke 5:31, “They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.” We trust God as our ultimate source of life and healing while also making responsible use of appropriate medical care.
So, as you walk into that hospital, laboratory, or diagnostic centre, refuse to let fear walk in with you. Tell yourself, “Whatever this test says, God will give me wisdom and grace for the next step.”
Pray for a favourable outcome, but also pray for accuracy. If there is something that needs attention, ask God to let it be correctly identified and properly treated. Your medical test is not bigger than God, and whatever the outcome, you do not have to face it without Him.
How to Prepare Yourself Before a Medical Test
1. Place the Test Before God
Do not wait until the result comes before you begin to pray. Commit the entire process to God—the appointment, journey, doctors, laboratory, equipment, samples, result, and whatever may follow. Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.”
2. Refuse to Diagnose Yourself Through Fear
One symptom can have many possible explanations. Do not conclude that you have a serious disease because you read something online or heard about someone who experienced similar symptoms. Allow proper medical investigation to establish what is happening.
3. Follow the Instructions Given to You
If your healthcare professional instructs you to fast, drink water, temporarily avoid certain things, arrive at a particular time, or make other preparations, follow the instructions carefully. Prayer should work together with wisdom and responsible action.
4. Tell God What You Are Afraid Of
There is nothing wrong with admitting that you are concerned. Psalm 56:3 says, “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” David did not say fear never came; he declared what he would do when it came. Turn your fear into prayer.
5. Pray for Accuracy
Do not only pray, “Lord, let the result be negative.” Also pray that the result will be accurate. If there is something that requires medical attention, early and correct identification may help your healthcare team decide on the appropriate next step.
6. Guard Your Mind While Waiting
The waiting period can sometimes be more difficult than the test itself. Refuse to spend every hour imagining the worst. Pray, occupy your mind responsibly, and avoid repeatedly searching for frightening medical information that increases your anxiety.
7. Do Not Isolate Yourself
Where necessary, speak with someone trustworthy. A spouse, family member, trusted friend, pastor, counsellor, or mature believer may provide encouragement while you go through the process.
8. Trust God With the Outcome
Faith is not merely saying, “Nothing will be found.” Faith also says, **“Whatever happens, God will be with me and give me wisdom for the next step.”** Pray for healing and a good report, but place your entire life confidently in God’s hands.
Scriptures to Read Before a Medical Test
Psalm 56:3
“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”
Fear may arise while you are waiting for a medical test, but fear does not have to control your decisions. Turn your attention from frightening possibilities toward your confidence in God.
Isaiah 41:10
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee.”
God’s presence does not disappear because you entered a hospital. Ask Him for strength and help throughout the medical process.
Philippians 4:6–7
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”
Instead of allowing anxiety to control your thoughts, tell God specifically what concerns you about the test and result.
Psalm 103:2–3
“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases.”
God remains our source of healing. We can seek appropriate medical attention while continuing to pray confidently for His healing mercy.
Jeremiah 17:14
“Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.”
As you prepare for your test, make this Scripture personal. Ask God to touch your body and restore whatever needs healing.
