Subscribe NowRunning a business requires more than having good products or providing excellent services; it also requires healthy cash flow. You may have customers, make sales, complete jobs, deliver goods, or provide services, yet still struggle financially because too much of your money is tied up in unpaid debts. When customers continually owe you money, a business that appears busy on the outside can quietly become financially weak on the inside.
Perhaps you supplied goods to someone who promised to pay within seven days, but several weeks have passed. Maybe you completed a contract, repaired something, designed a project, provided professional services, sold products on credit, or trusted a regular customer who said, “I will transfer the money tomorrow,” but tomorrow has turned into weeks or months. You keep calling, sending messages, and reminding them, yet some ignore your calls while others continue giving excuses.
This situation can become extremely frustrating because the money customers owe you may already have a purpose. You may need it to restock your business, pay workers, settle suppliers, renew your shop rent, pay transportation costs, handle family responsibilities, or invest in another opportunity. When customers refuse or delay payment, their debt can create financial pressure far beyond the original transaction.
This is why prayer points against customers owing me money are important for business owners, traders, contractors, freelancers, artisans, professionals, and anyone whose income depends upon receiving payment for goods or services. Romans 13:7 says, “Render therefore to all their dues,” showing the biblical principle that what is legitimately due to another person should be given to them. When someone has honestly received your goods or services under agreed payment terms, it is right to expect that agreement to be honoured.
However, not every customer who owes money is deliberately trying to cheat you. Some may genuinely be experiencing financial hardship, delayed salaries, failed transactions, business losses, banking problems, or unexpected emergencies. Wisdom requires distinguishing between someone who genuinely needs reasonable time and someone who repeatedly takes advantage of your kindness.
There are also customers who develop a pattern of collecting goods on credit because they know you find it difficult to say no. They promise payment, receive another product, make another promise, and gradually accumulate a debt that becomes difficult to recover. A business cannot survive indefinitely on promises when its expenses must be paid with actual money.
Sometimes the problem is not only the customer; the business owner may need to change the way credit is managed. If you repeatedly release expensive goods without deposits, written terms, invoices, payment deadlines, proper customer information, or reasonable credit limits, you may unintentionally expose your business to avoidable losses. Prayer is important, but prayer should work alongside wisdom and responsible business practices.
Jesus taught in Luke 14:28, “For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost,” emphasizing the importance of planning. Before extending credit, consider whether your business can comfortably survive if payment is delayed. Do not allow the desire to make a sale today to create a cash-flow crisis tomorrow.
There can also be a spiritual dimension to repeated financial frustration. When you notice persistent patterns in which money continually enters people’s hands but refuses to return to your business, you can certainly pray against every form of spiritual opposition, devourer, manipulation, dishonesty, and financial loss. At the same time, examine your pricing, contracts, invoicing, collection procedures, customer screening, and credit policies so that you are not calling a preventable business weakness a spiritual attack.
If customers already owe you substantial amounts, avoid allowing anger to push you into threats, insults, public humiliation, or illegal methods of debt recovery. Keep records of invoices, receipts, delivery notes, messages, contracts, payment promises, and other legitimate evidence of the transaction. Where necessary, use professional debt-recovery procedures, mediation, formal demand notices, or appropriate legal channels.
You should also learn that saying “no credit” to certain customers is not wickedness. You can be generous and compassionate without allowing your business to become financially unstable. If somebody has repeatedly broken previous payment agreements, requiring full payment or a substantial deposit before another transaction may simply be good stewardship.
There are customers who can pay but deliberately postpone payment because they do not consider your business a priority. They may spend money elsewhere while repeatedly telling you to wait for what legitimately belongs to you. Pray that God will touch their hearts and cause them to remember and honour their obligations, but also communicate clearly and professionally about what is outstanding.
Consider Jacob’s experience with Laban. Jacob worked faithfully, yet Genesis 31:7 says, “And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me.” This reminds us that financial relationships can involve unfair treatment, but God can preserve His people and give them wisdom even when others behave dishonestly.
If you are currently struggling because several customers owe you money, refuse to conclude that your business must collapse. Pray for the recovery of legitimate debts, wisdom in dealing with difficult customers, better financial systems, trustworthy clients, profitable opportunities, and grace to manage what comes into your hands. Ask God not only to help you recover old debts but also to prevent the same pattern from continually repeating itself.
As you pray these prayer points for customers to pay their debts, combine your prayers with action. Follow up professionally, send clear invoices, establish payment deadlines, document transactions, review who receives credit, request deposits where appropriate, and stop repeatedly extending credit to customers who have demonstrated that they cannot be trusted with it. Your prayer should not only be, “Lord, make them pay me”; it should also be, “Lord, give me wisdom to run my business in a way that protects the fruit of my labour.”
Why Customers May Keep Owing You Money
1. Too Much Credit
Giving customers unlimited credit can create serious cash-flow problems. Establish reasonable limits on how much debt your business can safely carry.
2. Unclear Payment Terms
Customers should know when payment is due before a transaction is completed. Clearly communicate deposits, balances, deadlines, and acceptable payment methods.
3. Poor Follow-Up
Some debts remain unpaid because nobody consistently follows up. Keep proper records and politely remind customers before and after payment becomes due.
4. Dishonest Customers
Some people deliberately collect goods or services without seriously intending to pay on time. Ask God for discernment and avoid repeatedly extending credit to customers with a history of broken promises.
5. Genuine Financial Difficulties
A trustworthy customer can sometimes experience genuine hardship. Where appropriate, a realistic payment arrangement may recover your money without destroying the relationship.
6. Lack of Proper Documentation
Verbal agreements can become difficult to establish when disputes arise. Use invoices, receipts, written agreements, delivery records, and other appropriate documentation.
7. Spiritual Opposition
A persistent pattern of financial loss can certainly become a matter of prayer. Pray against every spiritual attack upon the fruit of your labour while also correcting practical weaknesses in your business.
What to Do When Customers Owe You Money
Follow up professionally. Remind customers firmly but respectfully about outstanding payments.
Keep proper records. Maintain invoices, receipts, agreements, payment dates, and relevant correspondence.
Set credit limits. Do not allow one customer to owe an amount capable of destabilizing your business.
Request deposits. For significant orders or projects, consider requiring an appropriate deposit before beginning work or releasing goods.
Stop repeated credit to chronic debtors. Previous payment behaviour should influence future credit decisions.
Use legitimate recovery methods. When necessary, seek appropriate professional or legal assistance rather than using intimidation or unlawful methods.
Pray for better customers. Your business needs more than customers; it needs trustworthy customers who value what you provide and honour their payment commitments.
