Some people attend deliverance programmes expecting the minister to do everything for them. They arrive without prayer, repentance, spiritual preparation, or even a clear understanding of why they have come, believing that once someone lays hands on them their entire life will automatically change. Deliverance ministry should ultimately direct you toward Jesus Christ, repentance, truth, prayer, holiness, and a continuing relationship with God rather than dependence upon a particular minister.

Before attending, ask God to reveal anything in your life that needs repentance, correction, forgiveness, or surrender. Deliverance should never be approached merely as an exciting spiritual event. The goal is not to fall down, scream, shake, vomit, manifest, or have a dramatic experience so that you can conclude that something happened. The greatest evidence of spiritual progress is not necessarily what happens during the programme but the fruit that becomes visible in your life afterward.
Jesus emphasized the importance of freedom that produces a transformed life. In John 8:36, He said, “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” Genuine freedom should draw you closer to Christ, strengthen your desire for holiness, help you resist sin, deepen your prayer life, and encourage you to live according to God’s Word.
Before attending a deliverance service, examine your relationship with God. If there are known sins you are deliberately protecting, bitterness you refuse to release, dishonest practices you intend to continue, or ungodly relationships you know you should address, do not assume that attending another programme removes the need for repentance. Deliverance is not a substitute for obedience.
Forgiveness is another important area to examine. Some people seeking deliverance have been deeply wounded by parents, spouses, relatives, friends, employers, or people they trusted, and those experiences may have produced anger and bitterness. Forgiveness does not mean pretending that wrongdoing was acceptable or abandoning legitimate boundaries and justice, but it means refusing to allow hatred to become the permanent ruler of your heart.
You should also prepare yourself through prayer and Scripture. Instead of spending the hours before the programme worrying about what might happen, ask God for peace, discernment, protection, and understanding. Read Scriptures concerning Christ’s authority, salvation, repentance, freedom, faith, and the believer’s identity in Him.
Fasting may also accompany preparation where it is appropriate for you. However, fasting should not be treated as a magical formula or a competition to see who can go the longest without food. If you have health circumstances, take medication, are pregnant, elderly, or have another reason fasting may be unsafe, seek appropriate medical guidance rather than putting yourself in danger to prove that you have faith.
It is also important to attend a biblically sound deliverance programme. Not everyone who calls himself a prophet, apostle, evangelist, deliverance minister, or spiritual father should automatically be trusted. 1 John 4:1 says, “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.”
Be cautious of ministries that demand strange rituals, sexual acts, secrecy, dangerous substances, humiliating treatment, large compulsory payments, destruction of important documents, abandonment of necessary medical treatment, or unquestioning obedience to a leader. Biblical ministry should not require abuse, exploitation, or manipulation in the name of deliverance. Spiritual desperation should never make you surrender your judgment to someone simply because that person claims unusual spiritual power.
You should also avoid becoming obsessed with discovering the name of every demon, identifying every enemy, or interpreting every difficulty as witchcraft. There are genuine spiritual battles, and Scripture clearly teaches believers to resist the devil, but some problems also require repentance, counselling, medical attention, financial wisdom, reconciliation, discipline, or practical change. Wisdom asks God not only, “Deliver me,” but also, “Show me the truth about what I am dealing with.”
If you have experienced severe distress, hallucinations, prolonged inability to sleep, thoughts of harming yourself or someone else, seizures, or other serious physical or psychological symptoms, prayer can accompany appropriate professional care rather than replacing it. Seeking medical or mental-health assessment does not prevent you from praying. Truth and responsible care should not be treated as enemies of faith.
As you prepare, refuse fear. You do not need to spend the night imagining demons attacking you because you have decided to attend a deliverance programme. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
Go with faith in Jesus rather than faith in manifestations. Go expecting God to work according to His wisdom, but do not predetermine what must happen before you will believe that He has heard you. One person’s experience may be dramatic while another person’s spiritual progress may unfold quietly through repentance, renewed faith, wise decisions, prayer, and lasting transformation.
After the programme, your responsibility continues. Return to Scripture, maintain your prayer life, resist temptation, address destructive habits, remain connected to healthy Christian fellowship, and follow any sound biblical counsel you received. Do not spend your life moving endlessly from one deliverance programme to another while neglecting the daily Christian disciplines that help you grow.
