How to Deal With a Stubborn Child
1. Find out what is behind the behaviour. Do not concentrate only on what the child is doing; try to understand why the behaviour keeps occurring.
2. Set clear boundaries. Make household expectations understandable and apply reasonable consequences consistently.
3. Avoid correcting entirely through anger. Shouting may produce temporary compliance without teaching the child why the behaviour is wrong.
4. Listen to your child. Listening does not mean agreeing with everything. It helps you understand what your child is thinking and experiencing.
5. Be consistent. If behaviour is forbidden today but tolerated tomorrow, the child receives conflicting messages.
6. Watch the child’s influences. Pay attention to friendships, online activities, entertainment, school environment, and other influences appropriate to the child’s age.
7. Correct without humiliating. Discipline should teach rather than destroy the child’s dignity.
8. Recognize improvement. Do not speak only when something goes wrong. Encourage responsible behaviour when you see it.
9. Examine your parenting. Ask whether your own anger, inconsistency, absence, unrealistic expectations, or communication style may be contributing to conflict.
10. Keep praying. Some behavioural changes take time. Continue praying while consistently doing the practical work of parenting.
