Subscribe NowSpiritual laziness is one of the subtle problems that can gradually weaken a believer’s relationship with God. A person may still attend church and identify as a Christian while prayer, Bible study, worship, fasting, and personal devotion slowly become difficult or irregular. These prayer points against spiritual laziness will help you pray against prayerlessness, spiritual weakness, procrastination, distraction, and loss of hunger for God.
One of the dangers of spiritual laziness and prayerlessness is that it rarely begins with a deliberate decision to turn away from God. It may begin by postponing prayer, neglecting Bible study, becoming inconsistent in fellowship, or continually choosing entertainment and comfort over spiritual responsibilities. Proverbs 24:33–34 says, “Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth.”
A spiritually lazy person may know exactly what needs to be done but repeatedly postpone doing it. You may tell yourself that you will pray later, study your Bible tomorrow, begin fasting next week, or become serious with God when life becomes less busy. The danger of spiritual procrastination is that “later” can gradually become a lifestyle.
However, every difficulty with prayer or Bible study should not automatically be described as spiritual laziness. Physical exhaustion, illness, grief, demanding responsibilities, emotional struggles, discouragement, burnout, and major life changes can temporarily affect a person’s spiritual routine. It is therefore important to ask God for discernment so you can identify whether you need discipline, rest, encouragement, restructuring, repentance, or appropriate support.
The Bible also shows that believers must remain spiritually watchful because the flesh naturally resists discipline and temptation can exploit spiritual weakness. Jesus told His disciples in Matthew 26:41, “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Having a desire to become spiritually stronger is good, but desire must eventually produce disciplined action.
Overcoming spiritual laziness as a Christian requires more than waiting for another powerful sermon, conference, revival meeting, or emotional experience. You must deliberately make time for prayer, open your Bible consistently, remove unnecessary distractions, obey what God has already shown you, and rebuild neglected spiritual habits. You cannot continually give your best time and attention to distractions and expect your relationship with God to flourish on whatever time remains.
It is also important to examine what may have gradually taken the place of God in your daily routine. Social media, entertainment, relationships, work, money, excessive sleep, unnecessary conversations, and even legitimate responsibilities can become distractions when they continually push prayer and Scripture aside. Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
As you use these powerful prayer points against spiritual laziness, prayers against prayerlessness, prayers against spiritual weakness, prayers for spiritual revival, and prayers for hunger for God, be willing to cooperate with your prayers. Ask God to revive your prayer altar, restore your appetite for His Word, strengthen your discipline, and expose whatever is weakening your spiritual life. Spiritual revival begins when your desire to change is followed by deliberate steps toward God.
How to Overcome Spiritual Laziness
1. Admit Where You Have Become Lazy
Examine your prayer life, Bible study, worship, fellowship, and obedience honestly. You cannot seriously correct what you continually excuse.
2. Establish a Regular Prayer Time
Choose a realistic time when you can pray consistently. Do not wait until you feel spiritually excited before you pray.
3. Read Your Bible Daily
Develop a simple and sustainable Bible-reading routine. Even when you do not feel like reading, discipline yourself to open the Word.
4. Remove Unnecessary Distractions
Identify what repeatedly consumes the time you intended to spend with God. Set boundaries around social media, entertainment, excessive sleep, and other distractions.
5. Stop Postponing Spiritual Things
Do not continually say, “I will start tomorrow.” Pray today, read today, obey today, and begin rebuilding your spiritual life today.
6. Stay Around Spiritually Serious Believers
Christian fellowship can strengthen spiritual discipline. Spend time with believers who encourage prayer, holiness, Scripture, and spiritual growth.
7. Combine Prayer With Action
Do not only pray for spiritual revival; cooperate with your prayers. If you are asking God to revive your prayer altar, you must also return to the altar.
Scriptures Against Spiritual Laziness
Romans 12:11
“Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.”
God desires believers to remain spiritually fervent and active. Ask Him to restore passion and consistency to your walk with Him.
Matthew 26:41
“Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Good intentions are not enough to maintain a strong spiritual life. Prayer and watchfulness help us overcome weakness and temptation.
James 4:8
“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you…”
If you have become spiritually distant, begin moving toward God again. Do not allow guilt or yesterday’s failure to keep you away from Him.
Proverbs 13:4
“The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.”
Desire must be accompanied by diligence. Wanting a powerful spiritual life without developing spiritual discipline will produce little change.
Hebrews 6:12
“That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”
The Christian journey requires perseverance. Ask God for grace to remain faithful rather than becoming spiritually passive.
