20 Reason Reading The Bible Is Important

INTRODUCTION

The Bible is God’s love letter to us His children. It is one of the means through which God communicates with us. We talk to God in prayers, worship and praise; and God talks to us through His word – the Bible. As believers we must never neglect God’s love letter to His children.

Most times, as children of God, we tend to turn prayer into a monologue. We do the talking alone without waiting to hear God’s part of the conversation. If only we can devote more time to reading and studying the Bible, we will see that we have been missing out on a lot of goodies!

Why should I read the Bible of all books? There are several wonderful, too-good-to-be-true reasons why believers should regularly read and study the Bible. Some of them are discussed below.

    1. Reading the Bible daily helps us to overcome temptation: Regular study of the word of God is very helpful in overcoming the temptation of the devil. Reading through the synoptic gospels of Matthew and Luke, we can see that each time the devil tempted Jesus, He countered and overcame with the word of God, “the scripture says….” If Jesus had not given Himself to the study of the Scriptures (Bible), it would have been difficult to overcome the temptations as they came.
    2. It convicts one of one’s sin: The Bible convicts a person of his sins. When a believer regularly studies the Bible, he or she is regularly convicted of his or her sins. Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
    3. Reading the Bible leads to true flourishing (Psalm 1:2-3): Reading the Bible is important to a Christian so as to flourish in the ways that matter most. Psalm 1:1-3 speaks of the blessed, or happy, person who meditates on—not just reads through—God’s word. The one who meditative studies God’s word is “like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not whither” (Psalm 1:3). It is in studying the word of God that any Christian can flourish and prosper in all he does.
    4. Reading the Bible gives us approval before God (2 Timothy 2:15): The Bible says we should study the scripture (word of God, Bible) to show ourselves approved unto God.
    5. Reading the Bible gives us encouragement: Romans 15:4-5 says, “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had.”
    6. It helps us to know God better: Romans 10:17 says, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ (Bible).”1 Peter 2:2-3 also tells us that, “Like newborn babies, thirst for the pure milk of the word so that by it you may grow in your salvation. Surely you have tasted that the Lord is good!”
    7. Reading the Word (Bible) responds to our deepest needs: 2 Timothy 3:17 is a bold verse claiming that the Word is sufficient to speak to every human need, even the darkest ones—pain, insecurity, confusion, shame, stress, disability, betrayal, more.
    8. Studying the Bible aids evangelism: The Bible is not only beneficial for the discipleship of believers, but for bringing us and others to Jesus at salvation (2 Timothy 3:15).
    9. Reading the Bible is profitable for reproof: The Bible criticizes us. When we come to the Word of God, the Word of God exposes our sin. We may not listen to the criticism of our peers, but we should be wise to heed the criticism of God as it comes to us in sacred Scripture i.e. the Bible.
    10. Reading the Bible leads us to God’s heart: It was Thomas Goodwin who wrote that the Scriptures were written “to bring down and lay before us the heart of God.” Reading through the whole of Scripture, we can see God’s multifaceted glory put on display. It shows God’s heart that we might trust him with ours.
    11. It helps to defend against Satan: The Bible in Ephesians 6:11 says, “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Furthermore, Ephesians 6:16-17 says, “In addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
    12. Reading the Bible gives us direction in life: It helps us discover the next step to take in our lives. “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Psalm 119:105).
    13. It makes us wiser: The Bible is a book full of all kinds of advice, ranging from relationships to money to how to get along with your parents to career choice, etc. When we become wiser, we make much better decisions, and with good decisions come many other good things.
    14. Reading the Bible helps us to discover our next step: The Bible serves as a map for our pilgrimage on earth. Regular study of the Bible provides direction for the next step to take per time. “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Psalm 119:105).
    15. There is authority in the word of God (the Bible): Studying the Bible allows us to be certain of what God said. The Bible is our final authority. The book of Psalms 119:89 says “Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven.”
    16. Reading the Bible gives us peace: We all live such busy lives that it sometimes feels chaotic and noisy. Reading the Bible can help us sort through all the craziness to see what’s really important. It can likewise bring about peace in our lives rather than allowing us to wallow in our confusion.
    17. Reading the Bible keeps us from sin: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11). Regular study and meditation in the Bible constantly keep us in check and from committing sin against God. This is because we get to know what sin entails, including its punishment.
    18. The Bible is the source of good success: Every aspect of life is recorded in the scripture; ranging from marriage to academics, to business, to career, etc. In the world, there are many ways to success, various interpretations of success; but the surest way and the best type of success can be found in the word of God. Joshua 1:8 says, “This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; but you shall meditate therein day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success.”
    19. Reading the Bible builds our relationship with God: Our relationship with God is one of the few really important things in our lives. Reading our Bibles gives us insight into God. We can pray with Bible verses. We can talk to God about things we’re reading. We grow in an understanding of God as we read and grasp more of His Word.
    20. Reading the Bible brings a new perspective: When things are getting a bit stale, or things just don’t seem right, the Bible can bring a new perspective into the scene. Sometimes we think things should be one way or another, but the Bible may remind us that there are other ways to think about the happenings in our lives. It provides us, at times, with a fresh, new perspective.

CONCLUSION

From the above listed points, the reasons why reading the Bible is important to any child of God cannot be overemphasized. The Bible is our roadmap in this journey of life.

May we never be stranded in the way in Jesus’ name.
