Introduction

Are you tired of people making promises to you and failing to fulfil them? Perhaps someone promised you a job, financial assistance, marriage, a business contract, recommendation, sponsorship, promotion, admission, or another important opportunity. You waited because you believed their words, only to experience another disappointment. When this happens repeatedly, it can leave you asking, “Why do people promise me things and later change their minds?”

The Bible understands the pain of unfulfilled promises and repeated disappointment. Proverbs 13:12 says, “Hope deferred maketh the heart sick.” When somebody gives you hope and continually postpones what was promised, it can affect your emotions, expectations, and ability to trust people. The disappointment becomes even more painful when you have already made plans based on what you were told.

Joseph experienced something similar. After interpreting the chief butler’s dream in prison, Joseph asked him to remember him, but Genesis 40:23 says, “Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him.” The person Joseph expected to speak for him forgot him. However, being forgotten by a helper did not mean Joseph had been forgotten by God. Later, Genesis 41:9 records the same man saying, “I do remember my faults this day.” Joseph was remembered at the time that eventually brought him before Pharaoh.

If you are experiencing a pattern of promise and fail, do not immediately conclude that every person who disappoints you is wicked or that every broken promise is a spiritual attack. People’s circumstances can change. Some promise more than they can afford, some forget, some speak emotionally, and others genuinely intend to help but later become unable to do so. Unfortunately, there are also people who knowingly make promises they never intend to fulfil.

However, repeated disappointment should be brought before God in prayer. If opportunities continually come close to manifestation and suddenly collapse, if people repeatedly volunteer to help and mysteriously withdraw, or if good expectations constantly end in disappointment, pray seriously about the pattern. Ask God to remove every spiritual opposition, confusion, manipulation, and hindrance standing against legitimate opportunities in your life.

At the same time, prayer against promise and fail must be accompanied by wisdom. Do not resign from your job because someone merely promised you another one. Do not borrow money because someone said funds are coming. Do not stop applying for opportunities because one person promised to recommend you. Until something is established, continue taking responsible steps.

Most importantly, never make a human being the foundation of your hope. Psalm 118:8 says, “It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.” People can be God’s instruments, but they are not God. If one helper changes their mind, God is not stranded. If one door closes, God is still capable of opening another.

As you pray these prayer points against promise and fail, broken promises, unfulfilled expectations, and repeated disappointment, ask God for more than the fulfilment of one person’s promise. Pray for divine remembrance, dependable helpers, fulfilled expectations, discernment, and doors that no human manipulation can shut. Your destiny must never become completely dependent on somebody who said, “I will help you.” Your confidence must remain in the God who has many ways of helping you.

How to Deal With Promise and Fail

1. Know the Difference Between a Promise and an Intention

Not every statement such as, “I will see what I can do,” is a firm promise. Sometimes we become disappointed because we build strong expectations around words that were never definite commitments. Listen carefully and avoid making major plans around uncertain assurances.

2. Put Your Confidence in God, Not in People

Psalm 118:9 says, “It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.” God may use people to help you, but your confidence should remain in Him. The person may change, but God can raise another channel.

3. Do Not Make Major Decisions Based on Verbal Promises

Be careful about resigning from your job, relocating, borrowing money, spending anticipated funds, or abandoning other opportunities because somebody said they would help you. Wait for reasonable confirmation before making decisions that may be difficult to reverse.

4. Follow Up Without Losing Your Dignity

There is nothing wrong with reminding someone politely about a genuine commitment. People can become busy or forget. But there is a difference between a respectful follow-up and continually begging someone who has clearly shown no intention of helping.

5. Recognize a Pattern of Unreliability

If someone repeatedly promises and fails, believe the pattern you are seeing. Forgiving the person does not mean you must continue planning your life around their words. Adjust your expectations and make wiser decisions.

6. Do Not Allow Disappointment to Make You Bitter

One person disappointed you; that does not mean everybody will disappoint you. If you carry bitterness from one broken promise into every new relationship, you may become suspicious of genuine people God sends into your life.

7. Keep Other Legitimate Doors Open

If someone promises you employment, continue applying for jobs until the employment is confirmed. If someone promises a contract, continue developing your business and seeking other customers. If someone promises financial assistance, do not spend the money in your imagination before it arrives.

8. Pray Against Repeated Disappointment

When you notice a persistent pattern of good opportunities repeatedly collapsing close to fulfilment, bring it before God. Pray against spiritual opposition, but also examine your preparation, communication, documentation, timing, decisions, and the reliability of the people involved.

Proverbs 13:12

God understands that continually waiting for something you were promised can become painful. Do not allow deferred expectations to destroy your faith or emotional strength.

Genesis 40:23

“Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him.”

Joseph experienced being forgotten by someone he expected to remember him. Yet that man’s forgetfulness could not cancel God’s purpose for Joseph.

Genesis 41:9

“Then spake the chief butler unto Pharaoh, saying, I do remember my faults this day.”

The person who forgot Joseph eventually remembered him. God can bring genuine helpers into remembrance at the appropriate time.

Psalm 118:8

People can help you, but they should never become the foundation of your hope. Human ability is limited; God’s ability is not.

Numbers 23:19

“God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?”

Human beings may fail to keep their words, but God’s character is faithful. When people disappoint you, do not transfer their unfaithfulness onto your understanding of God.
