Prayer requires spiritual attention, discipline, and a willing heart, yet many believers struggle with becoming sleepy whenever they begin to pray. You may be active while working, talking, watching television, or using your phone, but shortly after beginning your prayer time, your eyes become heavy and concentration disappears. These prayer points against sleeping during prayer will help you pray for spiritual alertness, discipline, strength, concentration, and consistency in your prayer life.

Feeling sleepy while praying can become frustrating when it happens repeatedly, especially when you sincerely desire to spend meaningful time with God. You may plan to pray for thirty minutes or an hour but discover that within a few minutes you are struggling to remain awake. Jesus’ disciples experienced something similar in Gethsemane, where He found them sleeping when they were expected to watch and pray.

However, falling asleep during prayer does not automatically mean that you are spiritually lazy or under spiritual attack. Lack of sleep, physical exhaustion, demanding work, illness, medication, an uncomfortable prayer schedule, or praying while lying in bed can naturally make the body sleepy. Psalm 127:2 says, “…for so he giveth his beloved sleep,” showing that sleep itself is not an enemy; the issue is learning to manage your body so tiredness does not continually interrupt your intended prayer time.

At the same time, Christians should take persistent sleepiness and distraction during prayer seriously when it repeatedly weakens their spiritual discipline. Jesus told His disciples, “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41 KJV). The willingness to pray must therefore be supported by practical discipline and spiritual watchfulness.

If you repeatedly become sleepy during midnight prayers or early-morning prayers, examine your routine before immediately concluding that something supernatural is responsible. Going to bed extremely late, eating heavily, spending hours on your phone, working without adequate rest, or choosing a prayer position that encourages sleep can contribute to the problem. Sometimes the answer to sleeping during prayer is not simply to pray harder but to organize your life more wisely.

There may also be moments when unusual heaviness, distraction, discouragement, or spiritual resistance appears whenever you attempt to pray seriously. In such situations, you can pray against every genuine spiritual opposition while refusing to become fearful or obsessed with identifying demons behind every yawn. Ephesians 6:18 says, “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance…”

Overcoming sleeping while praying may require changing your prayer posture and environment. Instead of praying while lying down, you can stand, walk around, pray aloud, wash your face, choose a better time, reduce distractions, or rest properly before an extended prayer session. Small practical adjustments can make a significant difference in maintaining concentration.

As you use these powerful prayer points against sleeping during prayer, prayers against sleepiness while praying, prayers against distraction during prayer, prayers against spiritual weakness, and prayers for spiritual alertness, ask God to strengthen both your spiritual discipline and your practical wisdom. Do not condemn yourself because you became tired once, but do not become comfortable with a pattern that continually destroys your prayer time. Your prayer altar deserves enough attention and discipline to protect it from whatever repeatedly puts it to sleep.

How to Stop Sleeping During Prayer

1. Get Enough Rest

Constant sleep deprivation will eventually affect prayer. Where possible, arrange your schedule so your body receives adequate rest.

2. Avoid Praying While Lying Down

If lying in bed makes you sleep, change your posture. Stand, kneel, sit upright, or walk while praying.

3. Pray Aloud

Silent prayer can sometimes make concentration difficult when you are already tired. Praying audibly may help you remain mentally engaged.

4. Choose a Better Prayer Time

Your most spiritual-looking prayer time is not necessarily your most effective one. Choose a period when you can realistically remain awake and focused.

5. Reduce Distractions Before Prayer

Limit unnecessary phone use, entertainment, and other activities that consume your attention or keep you awake too late.

6. Keep Your Body Active

When sleepiness begins, stand up, walk around, wash your face, or change your environment. Do not remain in a position that continually encourages sleep.

7. Pray for Spiritual Alertness

Ask the Holy Spirit for strength, concentration, and perseverance. Where genuine spiritual resistance exists, resist it through prayer while maintaining practical discipline.

Scriptures Against Sleeping During Prayer

Matthew 26:40–41

“What, could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation…”

Jesus connected prayer with watchfulness. Prayer requires spiritual desire as well as alertness and discipline.

Ephesians 6:18

“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance…”

Perseverance is important in prayer. Ask God for grace to remain focused rather than repeatedly surrendering to distraction or unnecessary sleep.

Colossians 4:2

“Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving.”

Prayer should be accompanied by watchfulness. Develop habits that help you remain mentally and spiritually attentive.

Romans 12:11

“Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.”

Ask God to restore spiritual fervency wherever laziness, carelessness, or inconsistency has weakened your prayer life.

1 Peter 5:8

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”

Spiritual vigilance matters. Believers should remain prayerful and alert while also exercising wisdom concerning their physical needs.
