Before you meet someone you may eventually marry, you need more than excitement, attraction, or the desire to settle down. You need discernment. Marriage is one of the most consequential decisions a person can make because it can affect your peace, spiritual life, finances, family relationships, emotional stability, children, purpose, and the atmosphere of your home for many years.
Many people make the mistake of asking only, “Do I like this person?” when they should also be asking, “Can I build a healthy life with this person?” Attraction may bring two people together, but character is what helps them remain together. A person may look good, speak well, appear spiritual, and show strong interest, yet time may later reveal pride, dishonesty, irresponsibility, manipulation, anger, or values that do not align with yours.
This is why you should never allow loneliness, age, family pressure, or comparison to rush you into a relationship. When you have waited for marriage for a long time, it can become easy to overlook important warning signs because you are afraid of losing the opportunity. But it is better to take time and gain clarity than to enter a marriage that will later produce pain, confusion, and regret.
You also need to understand that being a Christian does not automatically mean someone is ready for marriage. A person may attend church, pray, quote Scripture, and still struggle with serious issues of character, self-control, communication, responsibility, or emotional maturity. Spiritual language should never replace careful observation of how a person actually lives.
As you prepare to meet a potential spouse, do not only examine the other person; examine yourself too. Ask whether you are emotionally mature, whether you communicate honestly, whether you can handle correction, whether you know how to resolve conflict, and whether you are prepared to carry the responsibilities of marriage. Sometimes people pray for the right spouse while refusing to become the right kind of spouse themselves.
Prayer before meeting a potential spouse should therefore be a prayer for clarity, not desperation. Ask God to help you see what emotions may try to hide, to recognize sincerity and character, and to give you courage to walk away if serious warning signs appear. Also ask Him to protect you from becoming so emotionally attached that you begin defending what you should be examining.
There is wisdom in taking time. Important conversations about faith, finances, children, family expectations, career, health, boundaries, responsibilities, and future plans should not be avoided simply because the relationship feels exciting. The goal is not merely to find someone who makes you feel loved, but someone with whom you can build a stable, respectful, honest, and godly marriage.
As you pray, let your heart remain surrendered. Do not only say, “Lord, let this person be the one.” Pray, “Lord, if this relationship is not healthy or right for me, give me the wisdom to see it and the courage to release it.” May God guide your heart, protect you from costly marital mistakes, and lead you into a relationship built on truth, wisdom, mutual respect, peace, commitment, and genuine love, in Jesus’ name.
What to Look for in a Potential Spouse
1. Look Beyond Physical Attraction
Physical attraction is important, but it should not become the foundation of your decision.
Beauty and appearance can attract you initially, but marriage will require character, patience, communication, responsibility, and commitment.
2. Pay Attention to Character
Character eventually becomes more important than first impressions.
Observe how the person handles anger, disappointment, money, correction, pressure, and people who cannot benefit them.
3. Examine Spiritual Compatibility
You do not have to agree on every minor issue, but your fundamental spiritual direction should not constantly fight against each other.
Second Corinthians 6:14 says, “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers.” Shared faith and spiritual values can significantly affect the stability of a Christian marriage.
4. Watch How the Person Communicates
Healthy marriages require honest and respectful communication.
Be careful if the person constantly lies, avoids important conversations, becomes abusive during disagreement, or uses silence and manipulation to control you.
5. Observe How They Treat Other People
Do not only study how someone treats you while trying to impress you.
Watch how the person treats parents, siblings, workers, strangers, former friends, and people in difficult situations. Character is often revealed through these interactions.
6. Discuss Important Issues Early Enough
Do not spend months talking only about romantic feelings.
Discuss faith, children, finances, family expectations, career, location, health, responsibilities, boundaries, and your understanding of marriage.
7. Do Not Ignore Serious Red Flags
Prayer should not be used to excuse dangerous behaviour.
Repeated dishonesty, violence, controlling behaviour, serious irresponsibility, manipulation, addiction, and persistent disrespect should be taken seriously.
8. Give the Relationship Time
You do not need to make a permanent decision after a few exciting conversations.
Time can reveal consistency, character, motives, and compatibility.
9. Seek Wise Counsel
Proverbs 15:22 says, “Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.”
A mature Christian counsellor, pastor, mentor, or trusted elder may notice things you have overlooked because of emotional involvement.
10. Do Not Lose Yourself in the Relationship
A healthy relationship should not destroy your relationship with God, isolate you from everyone, or make you abandon important responsibilities.
Maintain healthy boundaries and continue growing personally.
