Introduction

There are moments in life when one person remembering you can change the direction of your journey. A simple recommendation, introduction, phone call, word of encouragement, useful advice, or mention of your name before the right person can open a door you could not open by yourself. This is why helpers are important in the fulfilment of purpose.

A helper is not necessarily someone who gives you money. A helper may be a burden bearer who stands with you when pressure becomes heavy, a hand lifter who strengthens you when you are weak, an adviser who gives you wisdom, a connector who introduces you to the right people, or a recommender who speaks well of you when an opportunity appears.

Sometimes the greatest help you receive is not financial; it is access, information, encouragement, counsel, protection, prayer, or someone simply mentioning your name in the right place.

The Bible gives us several examples of this kind of help. Moses had Aaron and Hur who held up his hands when he became tired in battle. David had Jonathan who encouraged and protected him during a dangerous season. Esther had Mordecai who gave her wise counsel, and Paul had people who stood with him in ministry. These relationships show that God can use people in different ways to strengthen, defend, encourage, guide, and position others for progress.

Joseph’s story gives us a powerful picture of what it means to need someone to remember you. While in prison, Joseph interpreted the chief butler’s dream and told him in Genesis 40:14, “But think on me when it shall be well with thee… and make mention of me unto Pharaoh.” Joseph was not asking the butler for money; he needed him to remember his case, speak about him, and mention his name before someone who had the authority to change his situation.

Yet Genesis 40:23 says, “Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him.” For a season, the person who could have spoken for Joseph forgot him. But when Pharaoh had a troubling dream and no one could interpret it, the butler finally remembered Joseph and said in Genesis 41:9, “I do remember my faults this day.” One act of remembrance brought Joseph out of prison and placed his gift before Pharaoh.

This teaches us that some helpers are voice carriers. They may not have the power to give you the opportunity themselves, but they know the person who does. They can recommend you for a job, mention your business to someone, speak about your ability, connect you to a client, defend your character when you are absent, introduce your work to the right audience, or bring your name into a room you could never enter by yourself.

However, your confidence must never rest completely on people. Psalm 121:2 says, “My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.” Human helpers are channels, but God remains the Source. If one person forgets you, God can raise another. If one relationship changes, God is not limited. Your prayer should therefore be for divine connection, not unhealthy dependence.

As you prepare to pray, ask God to bring your name into remembrance before the right people at the right time.

Pray for burden bearers, hand lifters, wise counsellors, recommenders, defenders, connectors, encouragers, and people who will genuinely contribute to your progress. Also ask God to prepare you, because when Joseph was finally remembered, he was ready for the opportunity. May the Lord cause the right people to remember you for good and position you for the doors that follow, in Jesus’ name.

Understanding the Role of Helpers in Your Life

1. Helpers Can Be Burden Bearers

There are seasons when what you need most is not money but somebody who is willing to stand with you.

Galatians 6:2 says, “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” A burden bearer may pray with you, encourage you during a difficult season, listen when you are overwhelmed, or help you carry responsibilities until you regain strength.

Never underestimate people who stand with you when life becomes difficult.

2. Helpers Can Be Hand Lifters

Exodus 17:12 tells us that when Moses’ hands became heavy, Aaron and Hur supported them.

Moses was still the leader, but he needed assistance. There are moments when capable people become tired, discouraged, or overwhelmed. A hand lifter strengthens you when you are weak and helps you continue when you might otherwise have given up.

3. Helpers Can Be Recommenders

Some people have the ability to speak about you in places where you are not present.

The chief butler eventually told Pharaoh about Joseph. Joseph could not walk into Pharaoh’s palace and introduce himself, but somebody who had encountered his gift could mention his name.

A recommendation can open doors that qualifications alone may not immediately open.

4. Helpers Can Be Connectors

A connector may not personally provide what you need, but he knows someone who can.

One introduction can lead to a job, business opportunity, ministry connection, professional relationship, or valuable partnership. This is why you should never despise genuine relationships simply because a person does not appear powerful.

5. Helpers Can Be Wise Counsellors

Sometimes the help you need is the right advice before making an expensive mistake.

Proverbs 11:14 says, “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.”

A wise counsellor may save you years of unnecessary struggle by helping you see something you could not see by yourself.

6. Helpers Can Be Defenders

There are moments when someone needs to speak for you when you are absent.

A genuine helper may correct misinformation, defend your integrity, testify concerning your character, or prevent another person from making a wrong judgment about you.

This kind of help may never appear publicly, but its impact can be significant.

7. Helpers Can Be Encouragers

Encouragement can become a lifeline during difficult seasons.

Jonathan strengthened David when David was under pressure from Saul. Sometimes one person reminding you that you can continue is enough to stop you from giving up prematurely.

8. Helpers Can Bring Information

Information is also a form of help.

Someone may tell you about an application deadline, scholarship, job vacancy, business opportunity, training programme, or important contact. That information may become the beginning of a major change in your life.

9. Helpers Can Create Access

There are doors that open because somebody trustworthy introduces you.

Access should never be manipulated, but it can be facilitated through relationships. God may use someone who already has access to create an opportunity for your gift to be seen.

10. Helpers Can Pray for You

Some of the most important helpers in your life may never give you money or recommend you publicly. They may simply carry you consistently in prayer.

Never despise people who sincerely pray for your progress, protection, wisdom, and spiritual strength.

How to Position Yourself for Healthy Help

Be Prepared

Joseph was remembered, but remembrance alone was not enough. He was also prepared to interpret Pharaoh’s dream when called.

If your name is mentioned today, can your character and competence sustain the opportunity?

Be Trustworthy

Good helpers are more likely to continue supporting people they can trust.

Keep your word, handle responsibilities properly, respect confidentiality, and demonstrate integrity.

Be Grateful

Do not treat help as an entitlement.

Thank people sincerely when they support, recommend, advise, or encourage you. Gratitude protects relationships from becoming one-sided.

Maintain Healthy Relationships

Do not only call people when you need something.

Healthy relationships involve mutual respect, communication, concern, and appropriate boundaries.

Avoid Manipulation

Do not pressure people into helping you.

A relationship built on guilt, emotional manipulation, or constant demands may eventually collapse. Allow support to grow naturally and responsibly.

Depend on God Above People

People are limited. God is not.

When someone cannot help you, do not become bitter. Ask God for wisdom and remain open to other legitimate channels.

Scriptures About Helpers and Divine Remembrance

Genesis 40:14

“But think on me when it shall be well with thee… and make mention of me unto Pharaoh.”

Joseph understood that the butler’s remembrance could become a connection to someone in authority.

Genesis 41:9

“Then spake the chief butler unto Pharaoh, saying, I do remember my faults this day.”

The man who had forgotten Joseph eventually remembered him at the moment his gift was needed.

Exodus 17:12

“And Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side.”

This is a beautiful picture of hand lifters and burden bearers.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

“Two are better than one… For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow.”

God designed healthy relationships to provide strength, encouragement, and support.

Psalm 121:2

“My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.”

Human helpers are important, but God remains the ultimate Source of help.
