Introduction

The Bible is not an ordinary book; it is the inspired Word of God given to reveal His character, His will, His promises, and His plan of salvation to humanity. Through Scripture, we learn about creation, sin, redemption, faith, holiness, wisdom, judgment, eternity, and salvation through Jesus Christ. 2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”

We are living in a world filled with confusion, fear, conflicting opinions, changing values, and countless voices competing for our attention. When circumstances become difficult, people may even begin to question whether God’s promises are still trustworthy or whether His Word still applies to their situation. This is why every believer needs more than a Bible on the shelf; we need to understand what the Bible teaches and allow its truth to become the foundation of our lives.

Understanding the Bible is especially important because Scripture helps us to know God for ourselves. If everything you know about God comes only from your pastor, prophet, parents, friends, social media, or favourite preacher, you can easily inherit another person’s misunderstanding of God. The Bible gives you the opportunity to discover what God has revealed about Himself and to examine what people teach you concerning Him.

Biblical understanding also protects believers from deception because the Bible repeatedly warns that false teachers and false prophets will arise. Jesus warned in Matthew 24:11, “And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many,” which means sincerity, popularity, miracles, titles, large crowds, and confident preaching are not sufficient reasons to believe everything someone teaches. When you understand Scripture, you become better equipped to recognize when somebody is twisting God’s Word, taking verses out of context, manipulating people with Scripture, or presenting personal opinions as divine truth.

Understanding Scripture also becomes important when life appears to contradict what God has promised. There may be seasons when you pray but the answer seems delayed, when doors close unexpectedly, when financial pressure increases, or when you wonder why God has allowed certain things to happen. A believer who understands Scripture learns that God’s faithfulness is not measured only by today’s circumstances, and therefore difficult seasons do not automatically destroy his confidence in God.

This is why David prayed in Psalm 119:18, “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.” David already had access to God’s Word, but he understood that possessing Scripture and understanding Scripture are two different things. Every time we open the Bible, we should approach it humbly and ask God to help us see what we might otherwise overlook.

The Holy Spirit has an important role in helping believers understand spiritual truth. Jesus promised His disciples in John 14:26, “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost… he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” Therefore, when you study the Bible, ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate your understanding, bring truth to your remembrance, convict your heart, and help you recognize how God’s Word should shape your life.

However, depending upon the Holy Spirit does not mean ignoring careful Bible study or assuming that every thought that enters your mind is divine revelation. The Holy Spirit who inspired Scripture will not lead you to twist Scripture, ignore its context, or create teachings that contradict God’s revealed Word. Prayer and study must therefore work together: pray for illumination, read carefully, examine context, compare Scripture with Scripture, ask questions, and learn from trustworthy teachers.

The believers in Berea demonstrated this beautifully because Acts 17:11 says, “They received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” They were willing to listen to teaching, but they were also willing to open Scripture and examine what they had heard. Every Christian should develop this attitude: listen respectfully to preachers and teachers, but know the Bible well enough to examine what you are being taught.

Understanding the Bible should ultimately produce transformation, not merely information. God did not give us Scripture simply so that we could memorize verses, win theological arguments, impress people with biblical knowledge, or call ourselves Bible scholars. James 1:22 says, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves,” reminding us that true understanding should eventually affect our character, decisions, relationships, prayer life, behaviour, and obedience to God.

Why Some People Struggle to Understand the Bible

1. They Read Without Asking God for Understanding

Reading the Bible should involve both your mind and your dependence upon God. Before you begin studying, ask the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom and help you understand the passage correctly.

David did not simply read God’s law; he prayed, “Open thou mine eyes.” Develop the habit of praying before you study.

2. They Read Verses Without Understanding the Context

One of the easiest ways to misunderstand Scripture is to take one sentence away from the verses surrounding it. A verse may sound like it means one thing when read alone but become much clearer when the entire passage is considered.

Ask questions such as: Who is speaking? Who is being addressed? What happened before this? What happens afterward? What is the main message?

3. They Read the Bible Too Quickly

Reading several chapters daily can be beneficial, but speed should never become more important than understanding. You can finish ten chapters and remember almost nothing you have read.

Sometimes slow down. Read one passage repeatedly, meditate upon it, and ask yourself what it actually teaches.

4. They Depend Completely on Preachers

God gives teachers to the church, and sound Bible teaching is extremely valuable. However, your pastor should not be the only person opening the Bible on your behalf.

The Bereans listened to preaching and then “searched the scriptures daily.” Learn from others, but develop your own habit of studying God’s Word.

5. They Do Not Understand the Different Types of Biblical Writing

The Bible contains history, poetry, prophecy, wisdom literature, parables, letters, laws, and other forms of writing. A proverb should not necessarily be read in exactly the same way as a historical account, and prophetic imagery requires careful interpretation.

Learning what kind of passage you are reading can greatly improve your understanding.

6. They Are Easily Distracted

Bible study requires concentration. Constant notifications, television, conversations, social media, and multitasking can make it difficult to think deeply about Scripture.

Create a quiet environment whenever possible. Give God’s Word your focused attention.

7. They Approach the Bible Only to Confirm What They Already Believe

Sometimes people do not genuinely ask, “What does Scripture teach?” Instead, they search for a verse that appears to support something they have already decided to believe.

Allow the Bible to challenge you. A teachable believer is willing to say, “I believed this before, but after carefully studying Scripture, I now see that I was wrong.”

How to Understand the Bible Better

1. Pray Before You Read

Before opening Scripture, pray sincerely:

“Father, open my understanding. Holy Spirit, teach me through Your Word, protect me from error, and give me grace to obey what I learn, in Jesus’ name.”

Prayer prepares your heart to receive God’s Word with humility.

2. Read the Surrounding Passage

Do not build an important belief from one isolated verse without examining its context. Read the verses before and after it.

Sometimes you may need to read the entire chapter or even understand the purpose of the whole biblical book.

3. Compare Scripture With Scripture

The Bible often helps us understand the Bible. When one passage appears difficult, examine other passages dealing with the same subject.

Do not build an entire doctrine from one difficult verse while ignoring clearer passages elsewhere in Scripture.

4. Ask Questions While Reading

Become an active reader of Scripture. Ask what the passage teaches about God, humanity, sin, salvation, faith, obedience, wisdom, relationships, or Christian living.

Write down questions you cannot immediately answer and study them later.

5. Take Notes

Keep a Bible-study notebook. Write down important observations, questions, commands, warnings, promises, repeated words, and lessons.

Writing helps you slow down, think carefully, and remember what you have learned.

6. Use Trustworthy Bible Study Resources

Bible dictionaries, concordances, maps, historical resources, and responsible commentaries can help you understand unfamiliar places, words, customs, and historical situations.

These resources should help you understand Scripture rather than replace Scripture.

7. Learn From Sound Bible Teachers

The Ethiopian eunuch was reading Isaiah but needed Philip to explain the passage to him. Acts 8:31 says, “How can I, except some man should guide me?”

There is no shame in asking questions. Find mature teachers who respect Scripture and explain it carefully.

8. Meditate on What You Read

Do not immediately forget Scripture after closing your Bible. Think about what you have read throughout the day.

Ask yourself, “What did I learn about God? What should I believe? Is there anything I need to change or obey?”

9. Study Consistently

You cannot expect deep biblical understanding if you open Scripture only occasionally. Understanding develops through repeated exposure, study, meditation, teaching, and application.

A consistent twenty minutes can sometimes benefit you more than several hours once every few months.

10. Obey What You Understand

Do not continually ask God for deeper revelation while ignoring the simple truths He has already shown you. Biblical understanding should eventually produce biblical living.

The purpose of understanding God’s Word is not merely to know more—it is to become more like Christ.
