Subscribe NowCourtship is an important season because decisions made during this period can influence many years of your future. It is a time to know each other more deeply, observe character, discuss important issues, seek godly counsel, and determine whether marriage is truly wise. These prayers to pray during courtship will help you seek God’s direction, wisdom, discernment, purity, peace, and protection as your relationship moves toward marriage.
A good courtship should involve more than romantic feelings, frequent calls, gifts, outings, and discussions about the wedding. Proverbs 19:14 says, “House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the LORD.” If marriage is important enough to affect your spiritual life, finances, family, children, emotional wellbeing, and future, then courtship is important enough to pray about seriously.
One of the most important prayers for a courtship relationship is for God to reveal the truth about both people. Love can sometimes make people overlook warning signs, excuse troubling behaviour, or believe that marriage will automatically change serious character problems. Proverbs 22:3 says, “A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.”
During courtship, pray for discernment rather than merely praying, “Lord, let this person marry me.” Ask God to help you recognize character, honesty, spiritual compatibility, emotional maturity, responsibility, communication patterns, financial attitudes, family expectations, and the person’s ability to handle disagreement. Getting married should not become more important than discovering whether you are making a wise marriage decision.
Prayer should also be accompanied by honest conversations. Discuss faith, children, finances, career, location, family responsibilities, intimacy, health matters that are appropriate to disclose, expectations in marriage, conflict resolution, and other issues capable of affecting your future home. Amos 3:3 asks, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?”
Purity is another important area to pray about during courtship. Strong attraction is natural in a romantic relationship, but couples need boundaries that help them honour God and protect one another from situations that repeatedly weaken their convictions. 2 Timothy 2:22 says, “Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace…”
You should also pray against unhealthy pressure during courtship. Do not ignore serious concerns merely because invitations have been printed, families have met, money has been spent, you have dated for years, or people already expect the wedding to happen. It is better to address a serious problem during courtship than to knowingly carry it into marriage and hope that a wedding ceremony will make it disappear.
As you use these powerful prayers to pray during courtship, prayer points for courtship, prayers for couples preparing for marriage, prayers for relationship discernment, and prayers before marriage, remain open to God’s direction. Ask Him not only to bless the relationship but also to expose what needs attention, correct what needs changing, and give both of you courage to make wise decisions. The purpose of prayer during courtship is not simply to reach the wedding day—it is to prepare for a healthy, godly, peaceful, and enduring marriage.
Important Things to Pray About During Courtship
1. Pray for God’s Direction
Do not allow excitement alone to determine your future. Ask God to guide you and give you peace, wisdom, and clarity concerning the relationship.
2. Pray for Discernment
Pay attention to character, not merely words. Observe how your partner treats family members, strangers, people who cannot help them, and people with whom they disagree.
3. Pray for Honesty
Courtship should be a season of truth. Important matters that could significantly affect marriage should not deliberately be hidden until after the wedding.
4. Pray About Communication
Learn whether you can discuss difficult subjects respectfully. A relationship where every disagreement becomes shouting, insults, threats, manipulation, or prolonged punishment needs serious attention.
5. Pray About Your Differences
You do not need identical personalities, but significant differences concerning faith, children, finances, family responsibilities, location, career, and marital expectations should be discussed.
6. Pray for Sexual Purity
Agree on sensible boundaries before emotionally intense situations arise. Do not continually place yourselves in environments where maintaining your convictions becomes unnecessarily difficult.
7. Pray About Finances
Discuss income, debt, spending habits, saving, financial responsibilities, and expectations. Financial secrecy before marriage can become serious conflict afterward.
8. Pray About Family Influence
Marriage joins two people but also introduces extended-family relationships. Discuss reasonable boundaries and expectations concerning parents, siblings, and relatives.
9. Pray for Courage to Address Red Flags
Do not call every weakness a red flag, because nobody is perfect. However, repeated dishonesty, violence, coercive control, serious manipulation, untreated destructive addictions, persistent infidelity, or refusal to take responsibility should not be ignored.
10. Pray for Preparation, Not Just Celebration
The wedding lasts for a short time; marriage is intended to continue afterward. Invest more energy in preparing for the marriage than impressing people at the ceremony.
