Biblical Story Of The Fall Of Jericho
Joshua 1:6 “Now Jericho was strictly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in.”
INTRODUCTION
The story of the fall of Jericho was mentioned in the book of Joshua. The Israelites have spent 40 years wandering in the desert. Now it was time to possess their promised land which was flowing with milk and honey. God had already parted the River Jordan so they could cross the land. Now, they were face to face with the walls of Jericho, which was tall, shut, tight and impenetrable. This stood between them and the future which is the beautiful place God has promised them. We learnt from Joshua 2:1-24 how Joshua the leader of the Israelites sent two spies to view the land of Jericho. They were fortunate to lodge with a harlot called Rahab who hid them from the King when they came to arrest them. She later told the spies what they had heard about the things God did for the children of the Israelites and how the fear of them had befallen the people of Jericho. In Joshua 6:1-27, the people of Jericho shut their high gate against strangers coming in. God gave instructions to Joshua on what to do. Joshua called the people of Israelites to tell them about the instructions from God. The Israelites were to march around the walls of Jericho once every day for 6 days with the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant without making a noise or shouting. On the seventh day, they were to march seven times around the walls, then the priests should blow their rams’ horns, then, the Israelites should raise a great shout. All these were done by the Israelites which resulted in the fall of the walls of Jericho.
Following God’s law, they killed every man and woman of every age and all the animals except Rahab, her parents, brothers, and all that belonged to her as promised by the spies she helped to escape the King of Jericho when they came to view the land. Joshua cursed anyone who rebuilt the foundations and gates with the deaths of their firstborn and youngest respectively. We will be considering some lessons from the biblical story of the fall of Jericho in this article.

Subscribe Now- BE STRONG AND COURAGEOUS: Joshua 1:7-9
God commanded Joshua to be strong and courageous after the death of Moses. Though it was hard, he was able to be successful and led the Israelites to the promised land. As Christians, when moving forward into the future is frightening and fearful and we don’t know what to expect, remember God’s promises and for a brighter and better future, you need to be bold and courageous to step into his guidance. Cling to God, his faithfulness, his promises and believe he will always make a way. God has promised us a future filled with hope and prosperity.
- FOLLOW GOD’S INSTRUCTIONS DILIGENTLY
No matter what you are facing or the obstacle on your way, always learn to follow God’s instruction diligently. He is the Alpha and the Omega, and he knows the end from the beginning. Never doubt his ways because his thoughts are to give us an expected end. Joshua and the people of Israelites never think for a moment to disobey the instructions given to them by God because they believed in him and know his words are true. They never look at the tall and tight walls of Jericho or the people they might encounter in the land. They believed and put complete faith and trust in the Living God. As Christians, this is a good thing to emulate from, never lose faith in God, but trust in where and ways he is taken to you. People might think the ways are senseless or ridiculous but once God asked you to do it, don’t hesitate to do it. Trust in his guidance. God delights in sharing his power through people who look like castaways and in situations that look impossible. Never ever underestimate what God can do through you if you make yourself available.
- TIME FOR EVERY SEASON
The instruction by God to the people of Israelites was to be silent for 6 days. There is a time for every season, and we must adhere to it. Knowing the difference may determine whether barriers stand or fall. The people of Israelites understand the instructions and didn’t do it anyhow or in their own way. They were rewarded in the long run after obeying the instruction. As Christians, doing God’s work in God’s way will always accomplish God’s purpose. If you listen to God and do what is right, then you will be rewarded. Obeying God’s instruction is for our benefit because it will make him work in our lives in a better and great manner. God is delighted in people that follow his guidance on signs of different seasons to act on his instructions.
CONCLUSION
To mark what one faced as Christians, we should never lose face, be strong and courageous. Always learn to obey fully the instructions given by God. God is stronger than the walls which could represent any unpalatable situations and circumstances around you. He who made you have a brighter future for you no matter what you are facing now. It could also mean that God wants to enter your heart, you can’t erect a wall to keep him out if he wants to use you for his work. Just like when he called Paul of Tarsus for his work. If you stand like the wall of Jericho, God can use anything to bring you down and in the long run, will use you for his glory. Stand with God, be useful for his works and learn to obey him always. There is reward at the end for those who tarry in his presence and those who trust, have faith, and believe He is a God that never lies.
