Biblical Story Of Judas Iscariot And Lesson To Learn.

Judas Iscariot was one of Jesus Christ’s twelve disciples. Judas followed John the Baptist before he became one of Jesus Christ’s disciples, though little was said about him before he became one of Jesus’s disciples in the bible. The book of 13:26 mention that Judas was the son of Simon Iscariot. Just like all the other disciples, Judas was of the Jewish faith.

The Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, when the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him, but some of them advised not during the festival, because they knew some of Jesus’s followers will protest and riot. But Judas Iscariot heard about the plot to kill Jesus and the devil entered him. Judas went to the chief priests that he was ready to betray Jesus and the chief priests promised to give him thirty pieces of silver.

Although, Jesus knew his mission on earth that he came to the world to be crucified on the cross, so, while at the table with his disciples to partake of the Passover feast he told them one of them was going to betray him and all of them became so sad that how can this be? Then all of them began to ask him “Lord I know it is definitely not me” it is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.

But Jesus cursed the betrayal and said “woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.” Jesus took the bread gave thanks to God, broke the bread and he gave it to his disciples, saying take it, this my body.” Then he also took the cup and pour the wine, blessed it and gave it to the disciples and he said” this is my blood drink it, which serves as the blood covenant that was shed for all.

After the Passover feast, they went to a place called Gethsemane where they went to pray  but Judas was not with them while they went to Gethsemane, he had already planned his schemes and told the chief priests that he was going to kiss Jesus because the chief priest does not even recognize Jesus nor differentiate him from his disciples. So, when Jesus and the other disciples were coming down from Gethsemane, the chief priests with armies fully armed, crossed Jesus and his disciples, but Judas quickly rushed to Jesus and kissed him,  the armies seized Jesus and arrested him.

Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans on how to have Jesus executed. So, they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor. But when Judas, who had betrayed Jesus, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”

But the chief priests replied “What is that to us?” So, Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. But chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money. So, they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. Such a horrible ending for Judas Iscariot.

There are deep lessons to learn from his life story, not to scorn him, but to learn from him and not to repeat the same mistakes because we are all human and we can fall, but there are some things we can learn once we have seen it happen in someone’s life that was ahead of us.

1. Never give room to the devil. The devil will always come with a lot of evil
opportunities, it is left to us as an individual to stand, reject it and not to accept it. From the story we could see that there was an opportunity from the chief priests but Judas made himself available and the devil also entered him. There is no one on earth that has not been tempted to do one wrong or the other, it is left for us to decide whether we will accept it or not. God said, He has given us the power to choose. Life is a choice, and the decisions we make in life either make us or mar us. So, we must be careful with whatever we choose and be sure it is of God.

2. We should not be greedy: Greediness led Judas Iscariot to think about the plan to kill Jesus in the first place. He allowed the spirit of mammon to enter him, money is good but we must not let it dominate our thinking, in a such away that we do not even mind the consequences or the outcome we get from getting the money. Some people will go as far as committing fornications or adultery cause of money, but they end up with incurable diseases, some even go as far as kidnapping or rituals just to enrich their pockets, some is to dupe others cause of money, all these evil acts must not be found in the life of a child of God. We must learn self-control and work in the right way to get our own God given money. We all saw in the story that even at the end after getting the money he was unable to use or enjoy the money he took from betraying Jesus. All actions we take has consequences on us either positive or negative.

3. Never forget God: Lastly, we must never ever forget the place of the Holy spirit in our lives. The Holy spirit is always ready to help us whenever we ask Him. Hadn’t been Judas remembered God even after he had gone to the chief priests, his name wouldn’t have been known for betrayal in the history today, but he completely forgot God, forgot friendship, forgot the love Jesus had for them, he forgot the relationship he had with Jesus and the only thing that kept ringing in his ears was betrayal. As a Christian, we must never be part of people that will say” Let’s put Jesus aside”, we must never put Jesus aside in anything we are doing or whatever we may want to do. This is to tell us that whenever we call on Him, he hears us. He is always waiting for us to call on Him. We can not over call God, calling on Him in every step we take saves us from unforeseen or future negative happening
