INTRODUCTION

Church cannot be described as a building or a place where we go but God’s word talks about the church as a gathering of people who believed in the doctrine of Jesus, love of and make disciples as it were commanded by Jesus in the holy book. There is no such thing as a perfect church because the people who occupy the church are imperfect, the only thing perfect in church is the message and purity of the gospel. You can be in a wrong church when the church is no longer healthy and contributing to your growth spiritually. As Christians, we spend part of our entire lives as part of a particular church but there are signs that began to manifest in our lives and actions that point to the fact that the church we are presently attending is wrong for our total well-being. 

Church should be a way to connect to God, it should leave you the feeling of getting closer to God and also something good to think about or practice in life but when these feelings are not manifesting, they point to the fact that you are in a wrong church. Attending a church that is a little outside your comfort zone can actually be a great way to explore your faith and connect with Christ better through the new way than how you always did it. In this article, 10 signs that you are in a wrong church will be explained and the need to start looking for a new one.

• NO CLEAR VISION BY THE CHURCH LEADERSHIP: Proverbs 29:18 “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keeps the law, happy is he.”

A church where the leadership does not have a clear vision of who they are, where they are going and how they’re going to get there is already exhibiting signs of a wrong church. Can a church function or truly exist without vision? Jesus was the ultimate vision producer. He knows his vision, stating what the role of the church should be and its purpose. If you are in the church that the mission and vision is not executed within the church’s setup and organizational structure or program, then, you are in a wrong church and it is time to leave.

• NEVER CONVICTED OF SIN: In a church, where the preaching and teaching is not deep soul searching, it is dangerous for one’s well-being in God’s kingdom. When the sermon is always happy and joy messages but there are never heart-piercing, conviction of sin messages that will never challenge people, never being offended in your sin messages, all these point to the fact that you are in a wrong church. Churches are not designed to make you comfortable with the way of life you are living but to bring conviction through the word of God to bring correction to one’s life. Once a church is not balanced in teaching, the spiritual growth of its members is affected. If you find this sign in the church you are attending, it is time to change church.
• NO EVANGELISM PLANS: Matthew 28:19

When a church shows signs of no plans for outreach or evangelism programs, it is pointing to an unhealthy church. Evangelism is the heart of Jesus and a church should endeavor to preach in its community and surrounding areas. If the church that you attend never preaches or plans outreach in the community, you are definitely in the wrong church. Real church takes place by rendering service usually outside the church building.

• LEADERSHIP CAN NEVER BE CHALLENGED

Church leaders are meant to direct and guide the church in fulfilling its vision and mission and also to the direction to which God is leading. Church Leaders are not meant to be dictators. Members should never fear asking questions against any proposed idea or direction from the leaders in a church. You should be able to ask questions in a respectful manner and not feel fearful. If you are part of a church where leadership can never be questioned or challenged, it is a sign of a wrong church and instead of nursing bitterness, it is better to leave.

• NO FELLOWSHIP AMONG MEMBERS

A church where the members have no fellowship after the pastor has finished preaching in a sign of a wrong church. There should be warm greetings among members to show a loving church and can’t wait to get together after service ended. A church where after church ends, everyone scatters is a sign that you are in a wrong church where love does not exist.

• PRAYING IS A BURDEN:  1 Thessalonians 5:17 “Pray without ceasing.”

Prayers are an important key to church growth and also crucial for the church’s members but when prayers become a formality or an afterthought in a church, that is a bad sign. Each prayer in a church must be spontaneous, heartfelt and a joy to the congregation. Members must feel they have a wonderful fellowship in God’s presence but once that is lacking, that is also a bad sign. There is no more accurate indicator of a church’s spiritual growth than the vitality of its prayer life and if that is missing, it is an indicator that you are in a wrong church.

• LITTLE OR NO VOLUNTEERS FOR KINGDOM WORK: Judges 5:2 “Praise all of you the LORD for the avenging of Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves.”

Church is meant to have both leaders and followers but where the leaders are leading and no followers, then things are wrong. It takes both strong leaders of courage, vision, strength and commitment coupled with good volunteers from among the Lord’s people who will step up to go the extra mile and help achieve success in the work of God. If in a church, the congregation is forced to rely on the same few overworked volunteers, it is a sign of an unhealthy and a wrong church for you.

• LEADERSHIP WITH POOR SCRIPTURAL KNOWLEDGE

A Bible is the word of God set as a standard for teaching in an ideal church setting, a working and a deep knowledge of it should be what the leadership of the church should attain because this influences the foundation of that church. Members must be able to have the knowledge of how best to study and meditate on the word of God through their pastor’s teaching and preaching. Leadership of a church must take time to teach its congregation the scriptures, the difference in gospels, epistles and how best to apply them in their daily working with God but if such is lacking in a church, it points to the fact that the leadership have poor scriptural knowledge and you can’t give what you don’t have, it is better to change church in order to grow in the faith.

• A LOT OF COMPROMISE IS DONE

If in a church, what gets said publicly is different than what happens privately, there is a problem of compromise by the leadership or the people involved which is a sign of an unhealthy church. When there is a spin on every issue and nothing can be said publicly without agreeing on what gets said first, things are getting bad in such a church. If you are in a church and events are compromised to honor everyone involved publicly but different for another set of people, this is another sign that you are in a wrong church because half-truth is no truth. God doesn’t stay in such an environment; it is time to leave.

• NO ONE TAKES RESPONSIBILITY

Another sign you are in a wrong church is when no one takes responsibility for happenings in the church. Blame is the order of the day, leaders who stop the blame cycle and take responsibility have the potential to usher in real change in a church but when such is lacking, things in that church will never get better which is also a sign of an unhealthy church to be. If no one else does, still take responsibility and as you get healthier, you will eventually join a healthier church.

CONCLUSION

All these signs are mentioned so you can leave and find a healthier church to worship but it shouldn’t be an avenue or excuse not to belong to a church. The gathering of believers must not be forsaking and God endorses fellowshipping of believers just as it was recorded in the Book of Acts of how the disciples continue in fellowship and this makes the church to grow. We are to emulate that as Christians too.
