What Is Ancestral Spirit
Ancestral Spirits are spirits of humans who have died but are believed to still exist. Ancestral Spirits is a traditional belief by humans. Such people believe that the person who died reincarnated and stayed a while or long time with them.
The word “Ancestral Spirits” is not used specifically in the bible. Christians believe in the resurrection of the dead through Jesus and not in reincarnation of the dead. Yes, it is possible to raise up the dead but not without the dead body.
When God raises the dead, He raises it up with the body so that such a soul can still perform its enterprise on earth. To God there is no need to raise the dead without the body. If the body will not rise with it, the spirit and the soul returns to God himself.
Here’s a Scripture: Ecclesiastes 12: 7. For then the dust will return to the earth, and the spirit will return to God who gave it. When a man dies and God doesn’t see any need to raise him back to life with his body through His mercy, his body returns to dust but his spirit returns to God.

Ancestral Spirits are a manipulation by the devil and his agents because of the beliefs of men. The word “Ancestral Spirits” are specially carried out by what we call “Familiar spirit”. These spirits take the shape and form of the person who died especially if such a person is close to an individual.
These spirits do this to compensate the person who had the loss. In a family, the one closer to the deceased has more experience with such spirits and you would hear them say “I saw mum or dad in the dream, they are still alive”
Such people tend to see their lost ones in dreams, vision and sometimes physically on the road. John 3: 27. *John replied, “No one can receive anything unless God gives it from heaven. No man or spirits can bring back a dead man with the body back to life except God who willingly gives such power. Yes, the devil can heal or raise the dead just like God’s servants on earth because God gave him such gifts. The gifts of God are irrevocable. Scripture says “All power belongs to God”, Everything belongs to God. What he has given, he has given. The goal of the devil is to develop a system that makes for his advancement in a person, family, community, territory and even a nation.
In the beginning, the devil got such a system by deceiving Eve so she can believe him. The moment you believe in familiar spirits (ancestral Spirits) when they appear, they tend to come again and if possible begin to give you instructions so that you create a system for their accomodation. In other words, they make men create altars and make sacrifices that will sustain their presence. Such a spirit promises them something just as devil gave a false promise to Adam and Eve (they will be like God and become equal with Him) when they eat the tree of life. Therefore, ancestral spirits are dead spirits, traditionally believed to still patrol the earth after their death. Yes, spirits without a body exist on earth but they were never humans. Angels exist on earth but are not humans. Demonic spirits are spirits on earth but without a body. If you find them with one, it’s because they stole such.
In the book of Jude 1
- But even Michael, one of the mightiest of the angels, did not dare accuse the devil of blasphemy, but simply said, “The Lord rebuke you!” (This took place when Michael was arguing with the devil about Moses’ body.) We can see that the devil sought to seek the body of a powerful prophet of God after his death. If the devil had successfully gotten that body, he would have deceived many through the body of Moses. Ancestral spirits seek to appear in the shape and form of the dead, but such spirits are familiar spirits who can manipulate themselves through their gifts in order to deceive men that they exist.
Angels can appear to walk like humans on earth through the gifts of God. Such happened in the time of Abraham and Joshua, and also when Samson was about to be given birth to.But these angelic beings do so in honor of God and not for men to create a system of worship or altar for their continuous coming. To every encounter with an angel is for a while until God’s bidding is done. Zacharia met with Angel Gabriel once and also with Mary once. But met with Joseph, the foster father of Jesus more than once until the child Jesus was kept safe.
Although, the realm of the spirit cannot be fully understood by natural man and even the spiritual men or the spiritual beings. Only God of creation does. The one we can access are the ones he opened unto us by His mercy through the guide of the holy scriptures and revelations.
In the book of 1 Samuel 28, we see that our desperation for answers or things can make us impatient. Saul’s impatience with God made him sort for God through other mediums. God doesn’t answer man based on their terms but based on his own terms. Saul had his terms and wanted God to follow it.
1 Samuel 28: 6-7: He asked the lord what he should do, but the lord refused to answer him, either by dreams or by sacred lots or by the prophets. Saul then said to his advisers, “Find a woman who is a medium, so I can go and ask her what to do.”His advisers replied, “There is a medium at Endor.”
The desperation of a man is what gives access to another spirit that is not of God to provide us with answers. The woman who served as a medium is not of God but has the power to summon the spirit of the dead. According to God’s instructions through Moses and other prophets, the people of Israel have been told not to consult the spirit of the dead. For it was possible to summon them but not under the instructions of God but the devil.
1 Samuel 28: 11. Finally, the woman said, “Well, whose spirit do you want me to call up?”“Call up Samuel,” Saul replied.
This woman was able to summon the spirit of the dead because she has an altar that feeds such an altar. These spirits summoned most times are familiar spirits who can speak as if it is God speaking.
According to the Merriam Webster dictionary. Familiar spirits are 1; spirit or demon that serves or prompts an individual. 2; the spirit of a dead person invoked by a medium to advise or prophesy. So it’s possible for a medium to summon what is called “Ancestral Spirits” (spirit of the dead) but such summoning is done in disobedience and dishonour to God.
So such spirits which appear can be familiar spirits who can manipulate us because of our desire to see the one who has died. If such a person doesn’t know or understand the scriptures, he can keep accommodating such spirits around them.
Familiar or ancestral spirits don’t kill but can make a person turn his worship away from God the supreme. This is the means through which people of mediums are discovered or created. When one turns his worship away from God, other dimensional evil spirits can begin to take their stand, even the spirit of death.
God’s instructions is that, we have nothing to do with spirits who have died but we should fully depend on him and learn to walk with Him.
The story in the act of the apostles opens us to see that some spirits (spirit of divination) have the capacity to speak like God but through the discernment of St Paul, we confirm such spirit can familiarize God, but is not God. Many have been deceived by the spirit of deception because of lack of discernment.
Acts of the Apostles 16;
- One day as we were going down to the place of prayer, we met a slave girl who had a spirit that enabled her to tell the future. She earned a lot of money for her masters by telling fortunes. 17. She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, and they have come to tell you how to be saved.”
- This went on day after day until Paul got so exasperated that he turned and said to the demon within her, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And instantly it left her.
- Her masters’ hopes of wealth were now shattered, so they grabbed Paul and Silas and dragged them before the authorities at the marketplace.
The word “exasperation” means having or showing strong feelings of irritation or annoyance. This is what such spirits can do. They can hail a man to their grave. A man who doesn’t have humility as his watchword will enjoy the praise of the spirit of divination.
It’s a call for Christians to learn the ways of God and build their walk with God and ask for the grace of humility and discernment so they won’t be deceived by what is not of God.
