INTRODUCTION

Praying in the spirit is yielding, listening and responding to the impulses and leading of the Holy Spirit as you pray. Praying in the spirit is not only speaking with other tongues as the spirit gives utterances but it is much more than that. Praying the spirit is essential for a believer because it signifies the presence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit which means, one now can communicate with God effectively. Praying in the spirit is for the spiritual edification and boosting of the inner mind of a believer. Paul in the bible admonished the believers to continue praying in the spirit because when they continue praying in the spirit, their spirit is in direct contact with God, and they can talk to God by divine supernatural means. Praying in the spirit is a spirit directed prayer and it eliminates selfish prayers for believers. 

Praying in the spirit enables believers to be aware of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence and this helps to direct the believers in praying the right prayers to God. Praying the spirit builds up one spiritually and enables one to live a spirit-filled life. One gains control over the flesh when one prays in the spirit. All distractions before, during and after prayers are avoided when one prays in the spirit. The forces against us as Christians are spiritual, so we must confront them from the spirit realm, as the soul has no enough power to handle them. That is why Jesus sent the Holy Spirit as a gift to help us stand strong and firm when we are weak in our bodies. As believers, we should engage the help of the Holy Spirit in prayer, we may never experience lasting victory in Christ. 1. TO BUILD ONE’S FAITH: Jude 1:20

When we pray in the spirit, it helps to build one’s faith in God, we have the assurance that we are communicating in the language of God and that we are in close contact with Him through the help of the Holy Spirit. It gives us the boldness we need to win all challenges that could come our way as Christians. 

2. TO FORTIFY ONE’S SPIRITUAL ARMOR: 1 Corinthians 14:4

Praying in the spirit helps believers to edify their spirit mind. It gives strength to confront any forces that may come one’s way. Since we wrestle not against flesh and blood, we need to pray in the spirit in order to fortify one’s spiritual armor against the wiles of the evil ones. Praying in the spirit gives Christians the boldness and power needed to counter the forces of darkness and to prevail against them. 

3. ABILITY TO BE SENSITIVE TO GOD’S LOVE

After Jesus came to redeem man by dying on the cross, he promised the Holy Spirit to his disciples and after the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues, praying in the spirit now enables believers to be sensitive to the divine love God has for mankind. When we pray in the spirit, God uses that avenue to prove His love nature to us because we now have the privilege to communicate to Him in the language that only He understands and that always brings greater results than expected.

When you pray in the spirit as believers, we tend to develop the ability to hear God clearly when He is speaking to us. We develop a sense of hearing expressly from God when we pray in the spirit.
