20 Signs You Are Not Spiritually Sound

To be spiritually sound is to live according to the spirit of God, having a strong, healthy, and vibrant relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. It means living in line with biblical principles, bearing the fruit of the Spirit, and actively seeking God’s will. Someone who is spiritually sound is characterized by their love for God and humanity, their commitment to righteousness, and their constant spiritual growth and maturity. It is a state of being in alignment with the teachings and values of the Scriptures and striving to live a life that honours and glorifies God.

2 Timothy 3 vs 16-17, Galatians 5 vs 22-23, Mathew 22 vs 37-39,James 1 vs 22,Romans 12 vs 2.

  1. Lack of Spiritual Hunger.

The intense desire and longing for a deeper connection with the Almighty God can be referred to as spiritual hunger. It is the thirst for spiritual growth, understanding, and a constant relationship with God. When you discover that this desire and longing for more of God are absent, it is a sign of spiritual weakness.

The following scriptures reveal the significance of spiritual hunger, seeking the Almighty God with sincerity, and developing a deeper connection with Him:

Psalm 42 vs 1, Mathew 5 vs 6, Psalm 63 vs 1, Isaiah 55 vs 1, Jeremy and 23 vs 13, 1 Peter 2 vs 2, Revelation 3 vs 20.

  1. Lack of operation of the fruits of the spirit.

Without mincing words, a lack of the fruit of the Spirit is also a significant sign of not being spiritually sound. This “fruit of the Spirit” refers to the qualities and characteristics that the Holy Spirit produces in the lives of believers in Christ Jesus.

The operation and practice of these spiritual values go beyond praying to have them. Those who grow in the spirit will naturally find themselves yielding to and working in these qualities. They are the fruit of the Holy Spirit, so those who become weak in their spiritual journey will find it challenging to manifest the fruits of the Spirit.

These qualities are encoded in the book of Galatians 5:22-23:

  1. Dryness of personal prayer life.

Whoever is not consistent in prayer with and to God is surely not spiritually sound. This is an indication of spiritual dryness and a lack of effective connection to God. The Bible emphasizes the effects of prayers in these scriptures: Philippians 4 vs 6, 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Mathew 6 vs 9-13, James 5 vs 13, Ephesians 6 vs 18, 1 Timothy 2 vs 1 – 2.

  1. Lack of studying the bible study.

When you’re not reading or meditating on the Word of God, your spiritual health can suffer. One who is not spiritually sound will have difficulties in the desires and hunger to read, study and meditate in the word of God.

The following scriptures reveals the importance of the word of God to our spiritual health: Joshua 1 vs 8, Hebrews 4 vs 12, John 5 vs 39, 2 Timothy 3 vs 16 – 17, Psalm 119 vs 105, Mathew 4 vs 4, Psalm 1 vs 2, Colosians 3 vs 16.

  1. Lack of an Intercessory and supplication life.

This can also be referred to as selfishness or being self-centered. The Spirit of the Lord is far from selfishness. When you don’t pray for others and show concern for their well-being, either in prayer or in any other areas, it is a sign that one is not spiritually sound. If you grow more in the spirit, you will pray for both believers and unbelievers. There will be a stirring within you that desires the souls of men to see and know God. When the pursuit of a good life becomes primarily focused on yourself and your selfish interests, it is a result of a lack of spiritual growth.

1 Timothy 2 vs 1,  Philippians 2 vs 3 – 4, Mathew 20 vs 26 – 28

  1. Unforgiveness and bitterness.

Refusing to forgive others and holding onto grudges reveals a sign of not being spiritually sound. A carnal person lacks spiritual soundness, and such a person finds it difficult to forgive their offenders

Ephesians 4 vs 32, Colossians 3 vs 13, Matthew 6:14-15.

  1. Lack of Love walks.

The spirit of the Lord is the spirit of love. God is love. Whoever finds it difficult to walk in love, no matter how, is not healthy spiritually. This is an indicator of not being spiritually sound

Romans 5 vs 5, 1 John 4 vs 19, John 13 vs 34 – 35, 1 John 4 vs 8, Mark 12 vs 31.

  1. Pride

This is another significant sign that one is not spiritually sound; it is a spiritual stumbling block. Pride is typically understood as an excessive sense of one’s own importance or superiority over others, accompanied by rudeness and an insulting heart and actions. It has to do with ego, arrogance, and a lack of humility. There are scriptures that emphasize the harmful nature of pride for believers. Here are a few of them: Proverbs 16 vs 18, Proverbs 8 vs 13, James 4 vs 6, 1 Peter 5 vs 5 – 6.

  1. Unresolved anger and prolonged wrath.

Allowing anger and wrath to consistently control your life and determine your actions contradicts the Bible’s guidance towards a sound or healthy spiritual life. It affects lives negatively and serves as a sign of not spiritually sound.

 Ephesians 4:31-32. Ephesians 4 vs 26, Proverbs 14 vs 29, James 1 vs 19 – 20.

  1. Dishonesty

Being deceitful and dishonest goes against the truth that Christ represents. This is one of the way the devil keeps many in boundage and spiritual dryness John 8:32, Proverbs 12 vs 22, Ephesians 4 vs 25

Colossians 3 vs 9.

  1. Neglecting the fellowship with the brethren

Continuous and intentionally skipping or neglecting the fellowship or worshiping together with other believers can be a sign of spiritual decline or spiritual weakness. Hebrews 10 vs 24 – 25, Acts 2 vs 42, Colossians 3 vs 16, 1 Corinthians 14 vs 26.

  1. Evil Addictions

Evil addictions, such as addictions to substances like materials, harmful behaviours like immorality, or anything that leads one away from God’s will, can be seen as signs of spiritual dryness or a departure from God’s ways.

This is mostly stated as the fruit of the flesh in Galatians 5 vs 19 to 21. When all those works of the flesh become an addiction, there will surely be many damages to one’s spiritual health. This results in nothing much than lack of self-control and a reliance on worldly desires rather than Godly desires. Here are some scriptures that are  relevant to this concept: 1 Corinthians 6 vs 12,1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Romans 12 vs 2, James 4 vs 4, 1 John 2 vs 15.

  1. Failure to live and share the gospel.

When you are not actively engaged in soul winning, which is referred to as evangelism, it is a sign of not being spiritually sound. Spiritual growth will entail winning souls because the souls of men will become a priority to you, and thereby, your life will also become a means for others to be saved. A lack of a burning desire for soul-winning is a sign of spiritual illness. Mathew 28 vs 19 – 20, Romans 10 vs 14, 2 Timothy 4 vs 2, 1 Peter 3 vs 15, Mark 16 vs 15.

  1. Fear and Anxiety

Constant fear and anxiety, particularly when dealing with the fear of the unknown, may indicate a lack of spiritual health. Excessive frustration and worry about tomorrow or the future can make it difficult to trust in God’s plan and provision.

 Mathew 6 vs 34, 1 Peter 5 vs 7, Isaiah 41 vs 10, Psalm 56 vs 3. Philippians 4 vs 6-7.

  1. Disobeying and rejecting God’s will.

Disobeying and rejecting God’s will can be a challenging and improper choice. Being obedient to God and accepting His will may seem difficult or even impossible for someone who is spiritually unwell. Such a person, affected by spiritual sickness, may frequently go against God’s will, whether consciously or unconsciously.

Isaiah 1 vs 19, John 14 vs 15, Proverbs 3 vs 5 – 6,  James 4 vs 7 – 8, 1 Samuel 15 vs 22

  1. Absence of Joy of the Holy Ghost.

The absence of the joy of the Holy Spirit refers to a state in which a believer lacks the inner joy, happiness, and peace that is a result of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in their lives. It can occur when a person is not in close communion with God, is burdened by sin, or is going through challenging circumstances that have reduced their spiritual joy.

1 Peter 1 vs 8 – 9, 1 Thessalonians 1 vs 6, Isaiah 12 vs 3, Romans 14 vs 17, Psalm 15 vs 11, Nehemiah 8 vs 10.

  1. Lack of thanksgiving and gratitude  to God.

Lack of thanksgiving and gratitude to God is a spiritual condition where individuals fail to acknowledge and express gratitude for God’s blessings and provisions. One with this spiritual sickness will rarely see anything good around him talking of identifying God’s faithfulness to him or herself. But such a person will instead be full of complaints and evil thoughts.

This often leads to spiritual dryness and a difficult relationship with God. Thanksgiving is an essential aspect of a healthy and vibrant spiritual life, as it acknowledges God’s blessings and goodness.

1 Thessalonians 5:18, Psalm 107 vs 1, Colossians, Psalm 100 vs 4, Ephesians 5 vs 20, Psalm 136 vs 26, Philippians 4 vs 6 -7.

  1. 16. Evil desires and heart of uncleanness.

When evil desires reside in a person’s heart, this can indeed be a sign of spiritual dryness. When a person’s heart is consumed by wicked or sinful desires, it seriously indicates a lack of spiritual energy and a separation from God’s presence.  This often results from constant yielding to the desires of the flesh.

Galatians 5 vs 17, Isaiah 59 vs 2, Psalm 51 vs 10.

  1. Depression

This one is when there is persistent sadness, loss of interest, changes in sleep, tiredness and feelings of lack of energy, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, finding it difficult to focus on what is needed, suicidal thoughts etc. All the mentioned results of depression above are signs towards spiritual illness.

Depression is commonly a mental health disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of interest or pleasure in daily activities. It is mostly something that affects a person’s thoughts, feelings, behavior, and physical well-being. But, the persistence and the occurrences of it can be overcomed with good spiritual health. Lack of Spiritual soundness makes depression come so easily and it also allows it to tarry for long. It is a sign that the spiritual life of a man is under attack. Job chapter 3, Elijah in 1 King 19 vs 4 to 28, Jonah 4 vs 3, David in Psalm 42 vs 12 and Psalm 22 are good examples.

  1. Compromising your faith.

When you compromise your faith, it means that you are willing to set aside your beliefs and convictions in the face of challenges, peer pressure, or worldly temptations. It is call backsliding.

The Bible encourages believers to stand firm in their faith and not be easily influenced. Compromising one’s faith is a sign of spiritual weakness, as it reflects a lack of commitment to the fellowshipping with Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 16 vs 13

  1. Doubting your believe in Jesus Christ.

Doubt is a natural part of the human experience, but when doubts about your belief in Jesus Christ become persistent and overwhelming, it can be an indication of not spiritually sound.  The Bible acknowledges doubt but encourages seeking answers and reaffirming one’s faith.

This is a sign of spiritual dryness, and it can weaken your connection with God. The following scriptures explain: James 1:6, Mark 9 vs 24, Mark 11 vs 23,  Romans 14 vs 23, Mathew 21 vs 21, Hebrews 11 vs 1, Mathew 14 vs 31.

  1. A lack of identifying one’s self-worth in God.

This can be a serious spiritual illness. When individuals fail to recognize their worth and identity as valued creations of God, it may lead to a sense of spiritual emptiness and a disconnection from the source of their true value.

Failure to recognize one’s self-worth in God can lead to feelings of insecurity, inadequacy, low self esteem and a diminished sense of purpose. Therefore, understanding one’s worth in God’s eyes and embracing their identity as a child of God is an important aspect of spiritual well-being and personal development.

The bible speaks on the importance of understanding one’s self worth in God. 1 Peter 2 vs 9, Mathew 10 vs 31, Ephesians 2 vs 10, Psalm 149 vs 14 – 14, Genesis 1 vs 27
