How Do Christians Grow Spiritually?
For if ye live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the Spirit, you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.
Spiritual growth is a deepened or close relationship with God, where one understands how God communicates with one and there are no itches in the relationship.

For one to attain a level of spiritual growth, one must have confidently grown in the things of the spirit. God wants us to have a father to son relationship, where we can come to Him boldly and speak with Him day in day out. Jesus made staggering promises about his ability to transform human lives:
“‘Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, will have streams of living water flowing from within.’ By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive” (John 7:37-39).
This life is not ours; it exists independently of us. It is the Spirit of God. To connect with God, we must stay and be in the spirit, hence the bible told us that those who worship God, must worship Him in truth and in Spirit, therefore, to grow spiritually, we must be in the Spirit. We cannot be in the flesh and desire Spiritual growth. This topic will give us insights on how we can grow Spiritually.
Just like every infant requires milk and some other nutrients to keep them growing and to become an adult, every child of God needs to grow spiritually to be a mature Christian. There are two ways in which a Christian grows, they are: The word of God, and through prayers. When we pray, we give room for the Holy Spirit to work on us and in us. In Luke 18:1 Jesus taught us to pray always and not faint.
Are you experiencing weakness in your Christian life? Pray, are you lacking wisdom and direction? Pray. Prayer is the sure key to accessing anything in the kingdom. Prayer is the key to spiritual growth.
This is a really important question that every new Christian should ask. Becoming a Christian is the beginning of a new life, a new friendship and relationship with God the creator of the world, and it is important to know how we can draw closer in our friendship with God, and live a life that pleases him. Here are some ways that can help us to grow Spiritually.
THINGS TO DO TO STRENGTHEN YOUR SPIRITUAL GROWTH
- Spend more time with God meditating on His words.
The most important one is spending time with God, studying and reading the Bible. Meditating on the words of God, gives us a great insight into the depth of what He wants us to do per time and what we can do to please Him more. Lack of the words of God in any Christian life, brings about sin and death. Therefore, any child of God that desires to grow Spiritually must study and meditate on the words of God daily. Studying and meditating on the words of God should be part of your everyday life; this is called a Quiet Time.
- Listening to a godly music and teachings
Another way to improve or grow Spiritually is through listening to godly music and teachings. A Christian must not be ashamed to listen to godly music or teachings at all times especially in public places. A Christian who desires a Spiritual growth must shun all manner of worldly music and teachings. Music is a Spiritual force that controls the mind, hence the bible warns us to guard our hearts and minds because the issues of life flows through them.
- Meeting with other Christians
Attending church, going to a godly gathering or meeting with other Christians to share and encourage one another in the Christian dorm is another way to grow Spiritually. The bible says in Proverbs 27:17 that” Iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. We must not forsake the gathering of the saints, because that is where we get to grow Spiritually especially when we seem down spiritually, and cannot grow on our own.
- Reading Christian books
Reading Christian books of various kinds is another way we can grow spiritually. Christian books that edify and increase the Spirit man. Reading through the testimonies of other Christians also increases Spiritual growth, also biographies of Christians, devotional books are all ways we can improve and have a speedy Spiritual growth.
- Evangelizing or witnessing
Evangelizing or witnessing – sharing your faith and experience of God, with those who don’t know him. This gives you the opportunity to solidify what you know of God, and helps you to reaffirm why and what it was that made you become a Christian in the first place. Moreover, it gives you an opportunity to glorify God, by telling someone else your testimony or how God has helped you. Witnessing Jesus to the unbelievers is a great way to improve your Spiritual growth because it makes you stronger in your faith by proclaiming what God has done in your life.
- Having a coach, mentor or spiritual accountability:
Having a coach, mentor or spiritual director. These people do not tell you what to do, or demand that you take certain directions, but they have the responsibility to facilitate you and encourage you in your walk with God. Having someone like this in your life will help you to understand more clearly what God is saying, or what He desires of you. They are likely to keep you accountable to the vows/decisions you have made to follow the Lord. Examples of coaching/mentoring in the Bible: Moses and Aaron, Jesus, with the disciples for three years, teaching, training, leading and then leaving them to carry on his work.
- Living healthy
For the Spirit to function well and grow, the body must be well taken care of. Living a healthy life cannot be over emphasized, as a Christian, you must make time to relax, live a healthy lifestyle, take care of your body, as well as your soul, because your body is the temple of God. If the body is shut down, the Spirit can do little or nothing. Hence, we must take care of our body, eat healthy food, exercise, drink a lot of water and take more rest. This will make the Spirit to be alert and make the brain function perfectly well.
Prayer is the key to hearing from God therefore, any child of God that desires a Spiritual growth must learn how to pray without ceasing. Prayers are not only to ask things from God, prayer is meant to connect and commune with our father, just like a child to father relationship. When we pray, we connect to the father, we hear Him clearly and He directs us just like the Psalmist says’ The Lord is my shepherd, I have everything I need.
